The Giver: The Lost Chapter(s)
The music grew louder as Jonas neared his destination. Suddenly the sled stopped in front of two large, magnificent gates. Everything seemed dreamy and unreal. A girl, about his age, appeared before him. She was holding something as she approached him.
" Jonas," the girl said.
" How do you know my name?" Jonas asked. Suddenly, like in the memories when he perceived the word for something, her name came to him: Rosemary.
" You're not supposed to be here. Or him." Rosemary held out what she had been holding, and only then did Jonas realize that he wasn't holding Gabriel anymore. He took the sleeping baby.
" What do you mean? Isn't this Elsewhere?"
" No, Jonas. Elsewhere doesn't exist, it's merely the Community's word for Death,"
" So I really have no where to go now?" Jonas said, confused. His settings were beginning to fade.
" No, there is a place for you some where, but it's up to you to find it," she faded completely and so did the wonderful place around them.
The music was gone. The girl was gone. The wonderful feeling of true inner peace was gone. All of it replaced with the cruel, biting cold and the terrible silence. Stumbling, Jonas got up, knowing that he had to find that place that was his. Clutching Gabriel, he climbed the hill and for the first time in his life wished for Sameness again. It was a fleeting moment of course, but none the less there. Maybe this whole trip was in vain. Maybe they could never escape the Community and it's monotony. Maybe the beautiful place and Rosemary were only a dream, and they had no real place in this world. Maybe they would die. Jonas began to have all kinds of doubts climbing the hill, but the sight that greeted him once at the top was a welcomed one. Another city. The kind in his memories. The kind where people had feelings and color and choices and real families!
