One off. Set seven years before Harry Potter

It seems that all my worst moments are my favourite memories.

'"Oi, move!" and I was on the floor. That is the first memory of Platform nine and three quarters. Not the awe-inspiring scarlet steam engine that would take me to my new home for a year, nor the hundreds of students who would become my friends and enemies. No. I get some pompous prat rudely knocking me over. Fortunately that happens to be my favourite memory ever.'

"Oi, move" A massive grim looking sixth year wearing silver and green knocked me to the floor. I was alone, in a brand new place and I was on the floor. Perfect!

"Oh my god, that was so cruel. Are you Ok?" said the voice of an angel, with a hint of Irish. She grabbed my hand and pulled me up on to my feet. There I was face to face with the most beautiful girl in the world; long purple hair pushed behind one ear, bright yellow eyes that looked into the depths of my sole and shone with happiness, the flawless innocence of an eleven year old girl. She was perfection incarnate.

"My name's Niamh McGuinness"

"I'm James Shadow, thanks by the way."

"No problem, cool last name" She chuckled in the most harmonious way possible.

"Cheers, you wanna get a compartment with me?" I blushed "I said I'd meet my friend Eric in the seventh compartment on the left, I'm sure he won't mind."

"Yes"

"Give us all of your sweets or we'll curse you!" Three sixth years, including the one who knocked me over, slammed our compartment door open and showed us their wands.

"No chance pratheads, I wouldn't give you a knut if my owl crapped on it." Eric O'Connor said and laughed maliciously. I stood up at the exact same second that they attempted to curse Eric and got the jelly-legs jinx put on me. Niamh and Eric stood up to defend me when suddenly there were three unconscious bodies on the floor.

"Finite!" A tanned boy with brown hair came into the compartment and sat down opposite us pointed his wand at me and broke the jinx.

"Those twits bugged my brother for the past six years for being muggle born, they had it coming." He said in a harsh tone but it softened dramatically when he said "My name's Richard Welsh, you don't mind if I sit here, do you?"

"McGuinness, Niamh" Professor McGonagall said. She walked up to the Sorting hat and put it on and it yelled "GRYFFINDOR!"

Eric Matthews was put in Slytherin. "Oh great" I thought, two of my best friends in opposite Houses

Endless names came between me and Eric, but finally it was my turn. Ravenclaw! Damn I wasn't with either of them. What of Richard though, there was still hope.

"Welsh, Richard." Silence until… "Hufflepuff."

Everyone of my friends were in other houses, I would hardly see them. But when I looked around I saw Niamh with the same look in her eyes. She really did like me.

"Today we will be learning how to transfigure a match into a needle" Professor McGonagall stated "It will be the hardest thing you'll ever have had to face so far. This requires uncanny skill and concentration and those of you who fail to grasp this will struggle in the upcoming exams." Oh great, just what I needed, to make a prat of myself in front of the Gryffindors. I've never had a flare for Transfiguration, I've always preferred Defence and Potions.

"Now, you will be working in pairs, you and you, together." I looked around expecting to see Mark Eagle, Alex Raven or Ross Crowe but instead I saw that Professor McGonagall had pointed to Niamh.

When I sat next to her I was able to transfigure extremely well. Within five tries we had each turned our matches into needles.

They are my favourite memories because I met the love of my life, realised she loved me, saw how much she meant to me and I met my other best friend.
