(Brynn is 11, Kili is 16, Fili is 17.)
Fili and Kili sat in front of the fire. The sun had set a long time ago but they were still up. Brynn had gone to bed with a headache.
"Kili, do you ever wonder what it would be like if Brynn wasn't born?" Fili asked.
Kili smiled. "Now what kind of life would that be?"
"It's just a question. I'm so used to her always being with me. It would be strange for her to not be around."
"I've thought about it before. I think life without Brynn would be dull. Lonely. Can you imagine going to sleep every night without a hug or kiss from her? Or coming home to a quiet house and having her not jump on us?"
"Yeah... We wouldn't have anyone to take care of or protect. One of the biggest privileges and joys of my life is being able to comfort her."
"What did we do before she was born?" Kili asked. "We can't imagine not having her with us but there was a time when she wasn't alive."
"We waited for her to be born, I guess." Fili laughed.
Thorin walked in, his arms crossed over his chest.
"You two should be in bed, it's late." He said.
"We were just talking, Uncle." Kili explained.
"I can see that."
"About what it would be like if Brynn wasn't born." Kili continued.
"Life without Brynn?" Thorin exclaimed. "How boring." He winked.
"That's what we said." Fili laughed.
"I remember when she was born, thinking how different it would be to have a niece. Now all I can think of is how different it would be without one."
"We can't imagine not having a little sister." Kili said.
"She truly is an amazing girl." Thorin remarked.
The brothers nodded in agreement. Thorin sat down in a big chair that he always sat in.
"You two are the best brothers the world has to offer. I want you to know that. I am so proud of the loyal dwarves you've become. Don't ever stop feeling the way you do for Brynn."
Fili and Kili sat in stunned silence.
"Uncle, I-I don't know what to say." Fili stuttered.
"You don't need to say anything, Fili. Now, you two should get to bed."
The boys got up and walked to the hall. They stopped at the door to their bedroom, looking at each other before turning to Thorin.
"Uncle?" Fili asked.
"Yes, Fili?" Thorin answered.
"We can't imagine life without you, either." Kili said.
"Thank you, boys."
