Chapter 1:
I don't think I've ever been a bigger mix of nervous and excited.
I'm finally moving on from my old school. It's a little later in the year, mid September, because this new school has a few "transfer days" when new students come in. My old school was the most conservative private school ever. They even went as far as to separate the girls and the boys, each sitting on different sides of the classroom. It was a weird mix thanks to the simple, boring, peaceful routine, but it got tiresome. I only went there because my even-more-conservative parents, namely my dad, made me, so needless to say it took me so long to convince them to let me transfer.
The bus finally stops and I get out, looking at the building for the first time. It's a huge, brick building with grass covering the whole front of the school. The only place there isn't any is the wide pathway that leads up to the large doors, where large groups of students walk and laugh with their friends. I've been staring at the new building for such a long time that I fall over shocked when I'm smacked into by a tall, dark skinned girl.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" She extends her hand to help me up, which I grasp.
"Don't worry, it was mostly my fault! I'm Tris by the way."
"Christina. Nice to meet you!"
"You too! Hey, do you have any clue where we're supposed to go? I'm a transfer."
"Me too! So not super helpful," she laughs. "Are they gonna give us maps or something? It's like they want us to drown in a sea of people!"
"No idea. Do you want to try to find the main office with me? That way at least we'll be late together."
She laughs with me. "Sounds good!"
We wander around for a couple minutes before we finally crack and ask a student where to find the office. She points us in the right direction, and we end up getting there 10 minutes late with a roomful of people staring at us.
I look around sheepishly, my cheeks burning, but thankfully Christina speaks for me. "What? Sorry we got lost, it's our first day," she says with a surprisingly daring tone. The principal, a tall, muscular, dark man crosses his arms and looks at her with a warning look in his eyes before he starts to talk.
"Hello transfers. I am your principal, and you will refer to me as Mr. Max. We have a guide to help you find your way around, so you will be paired up according to this list:
Guide: Adam, Mia and Abby
Guide: Beth, Manny and Will
Guide: Uriah, Beatrice and Christina
Guide: Gus, Hazel and Isaac
Guide: Lauren, Elizabeth and Alex
Christina and I smirk at each other. This should be a fun day.
