A, meleth velithath!

Elen elenath,

Gil ngiliath!

Edegil, i-Edegil-nîn lechiel

Ech mell athan ro-vell!

"What's he saying?" Kí asked, sitting beside him, gazing out the Eye of Mahal into the garden Legolas had planted.

"Lived with the bloody Elf for centuries," Gimli grunted. "You'd think I'd fucking know."

Oh, my love of all loves!

Star of the starry sky

Bright spark of all the host of stars!

Seven Stars, my *Seven Stars having flamed

You are fair beyond fairest!

*Edegil (Sindarin): Seven stars

"Seven Stars" is a pun. Gimli i-chathod ('Gimli the Dwarf' in Sindarin) sounds like Gimlî hazid ('Seven Stars'-a name for the constellation The Great Bear in Westron) and could be easily confused to non-native Sindarin speakers. Hathod mutates to *chathod with the definite article, but hathod and hazad (becomes hazid when plural) both have their root in the Khuzdul word Khazad, the Dwarves' word for themselves. It's an endearing, romantic, tri-lingual pun/pet name that Gimli remains oblivious to.

[Also I need a life.]
