I've seen a lot in my time on this earth. I wouldn't say I've seen it all, as this past year has proven I clearly haven't. Growing up in the way I did, I wasn't impervious to the wicked ways of the world. I thought I knew what people were capable of. Maybe I do know, because to call these mutants human would be insane….

To whoever's reading this, I'm going to show you something new. You think high schools bad? Try this on for size.

385 Days Ago, New Mexico Desert

The heat was nearly intolerable. At times it felt like my very own skin was being boiled off. "There, there's a gas station right ahead!" My mother quipped at my father. "Okay, okay I'm pulling in now you old bat." Daniel Martinez growled back. Jesus. If this is what marriage and love looked like, I didn't want that in my future. My parents spent more time arguing and yelling at each other than being kind. I knew it was only a matter of time before they got divorced. Firm hands gripped at my hip bones, awakening me from my reverie as the RV made a rumbling turn into 'Jeb's Gas Station & Convenience Store'. The crumbling sign with hand painted letters was holding up pretty well despite how old it all looked. Mathias's chin dug into my shoulder blade, skin on skin, sending shivers down my spine. "Let's fuck in the desert tonight…" Mathias whispered into my ear, mouth brushing the fragile skin. In less than a second, my heart sunk with each word. "Romantic." I was not amused, and responded with such actions like an elbow to the baby maker. Mathias emitted a low groan, his hand reaching from my hip to wrist and yanking it hard. "What the fuck you bitch?!" And here comes the arguing and name calling. Just like mom and dad.

I shook off my boyfriend, anger twisting in my belly. "Fuck you Mathias. I don't know why I wanted you to come on this stupid trip anyways." And with that, I clambered out of the RV and into the sweltering heat outside. No lie, the sight was beautiful. Hopefully, that's the reason why Uncle Howard followed me outside. "Pretty right Rossy?" Uncle Howards hand slid down my behind, fingers gripping me through the denim, nails latching onto the fabric and tugging. The sensation sent me spiraling away from him as calmly as I could muster. "Howard, stop. Mum's right there, so is Mathias. If someone catches you, you're fucked." I tried to sound brave, but my voice came out all wobbly. I was so afraid of this man, and yet no one even knew about it. Except Mathias who had suspected something was wrong. I barely had the balls to tell him, I could never be able to tell my whole family. Howard grumbled something before smirking. "I guess we should somewhere more private then…" he began sauntering towards me once more, before the door of the RV opened and Mathias came out. All remembrance of our argument seemed to disappear when he realized what he had walked in on. "Come on Rosslyn" his voice was so slow, much calmer and always more powerful than mine. Our hands grasped together and he tugged me around the side of the RV towards the part of the building I assume would be considered the convenience store. As he was sliding his arm over my shoulders and bringing our interlocked hands to his lips, I heard the mumbled words escape from Mathias's lips that sent fear creeping into my chest. "Next time he touches you, I'm killing him"
