A/N: So here's the first installment in my Newsies/Musical series. I'm taking songs from Broadway shows and putting the Newsies in them. I'm excited about it, and hopefully you guys will like the stories too. Don't forget to leave a review!
Gary, Indiana
The Music Man
"Hey, Dave?" Les asked. The boys were sitting in their bedroom one hot night in July. Les was sitting on the floor, playing with toy soldiers, and David was sitting on his bed reading.
"Yeah, Les?" David answered. Les abandoned his soldiers and scratched his nose thoughtfully.
"Guess where Denton's from." David sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He had a feeling that this would be another circular conversation that lasted an absurd amount of time.
"Where's Denton from, Les?" The younger boy shook his head vehemently.
"No Dave, you have to guess," David sighed again and acquiesced. He knew Les would never give up, and he thought it would be better to get the whole ordeal over with.
"I dunno, Les. Right here in New York, I suppose," Les grinned and bounced up.
"You're wrong!" he crowed. "That's what I guessed too, at first, but Denton told me that he wasn't from New York, Paris, or Rome! I guessed those, too."
David tried again. "Chicago?" Les shook his head.
"No"
"Milwaukee"
"No"
"Baton Rouge"
"Where's that?"
"Louisiana"
"Oh…nope,"
"Atlanta,"
"No,"
"I give up, Les. Where's he from?"
"He's from Indiana! Gary, Indiana!"
"I never would have guessed that, Les," David said, shaking his head. He couldn't believe his kid brother sometimes. Honestly, why would he think David would guess a random place like Gary, Indiana? Hell, David hadn't even heard of Gary, Indiana before!
"Isn't that a great name? Gary! It's named after the first guy who settled there. His name was Gary and he was a farmer and Denton said that most everyone around those parts is still a farmer and there wasn't much news at all and that's why he came to New York because there's sure to be news in a big city. Ain't there, though? We're makin' news with the strike and everything, right, Dave?"
"Slow down, Les. Yeah, we're making news with the strike." David replied.
Les sat back down on the floor and began playing with the toy soldiers again. There was quiet for a few blessed moments, and David continued reading. A few minutes later, the silence was shattered.
"Geez, Gary, Indiana! What a place!" Les mused. David smiled and turned a page in his book. Sometimes Les was a pain, but David enjoyed him most of the time. He was such a…kid, and he acted like David did when he was Les's age.
