Set after the comic "Going Home Again."

Mai wonders how Zuko feels about returning to the Fire Nation…not that she cares or anything.

She kissed Zuko.

Lying awake on her bed, that was all Mai could think about. She always had trouble sleeping. As if the day wasn't boring enough, she was tortured at night by continuing to be bored. Tonight was a different story. Her mind was plagued by thoughts of a certain prince – Zuko, his name was Zuko – thoughts she had trouble deciphering. On their little "date" in Ba Sing Se they had talked, and laughed and she felt things, things that were certainly not boredom.

Mai didn't consider herself to be one of those girls, the ones going on and on prattling about happiness and sadness and undying love. Her facial expression was a mask devoid of any emotion – good girls behave and don't cause a scene and don't speak unless spoken to – because life is quite boring – this would make me smile if I wasn't so bored, I'd be worried when Tom-Tom was kidnapped but it doesn't matter, "What's wrong with Mai? She hasn't found a suitor yet." No need for her to feel shame and disappointment over such a trivial matter. Now that Zuko was here, she had felt – but it's not okay to feel, because you can't get hurt when you don't care at all – and she was not sure what to do about it.

Not only had she felt, she was curious. Zuko wasn't boring. He seemed to be genuinely interested in her. And she had this feeling that she was interested in him too. Mai wasn't used to this. Mai wasn't used to this at all. Questions popped into her head, questions that she wanted to ask him – Why did you decide to help us? Why did you change your mind about coming home? How do you think your father will react to you? Are you nervous at all? What's going to happen now that the Avatar is gone? Why was Azula willing to help you? – but asking questions isn't really a Mai thing to do.

Besides, it was none of her business. The last thing Zuko needed was her trying to pry information from him. Let's keep the past in the past and start over. Focus on the now. She didn't need his whole life story. And if he happened to tell her, it's not like she'd care. At least, it would seem that way to everyone else. Mai kept the most important things to herself.

She had a lifetime of practice.
