Her eyes were blue.
Her eyes were blue like the clean, cloudless sky above them while they stood there contemplating the immense, deserted area where their search was meant to take place.
He swallowed hard. This is such a giant quarry, he thought, although probably most quarries were that big. Finding signs of anything being recently buried in there – and doing it quickly enough - seemed unrealistic, if not strictly impossible. Giving up, however, wasn't an option, so he gave his team some indications and started the search himself, looking for anything that might lead to the exact spot where his partner and Hodgins had ended up after being kidnapped.
Suddenly something caught his eye. It was an almost invisible puff of dust shooting through the ground, and it reminded him of the towers of smoke that follow an explosion. He slid down the slope he had been standing on, and he started running, faster than he had ever run before. He had to find her- he was going to find her – despite the fact that merely thinking about her buried several feet under that grayish, sand-like soil, out of breath, and basically dying was the most terribly discouraging idea to ever cross his mind. But that couldn't stop him. Seeley Booth wasn't a quitter, and he wasn't going to start then.
When he reached the place, he fell to his knees and started digging frantically. There was dirt on his clothes and on his hair and underneath his fingernails but he didn't care: he was completely devoted to his task, not noticing his team moving around him as they dug as well.
Then his hands touched something that wasn't dust. It was a human hand, her hand. He grabbed her arm and started pulling upwards, strongly but carefully, and by himself he dragged her out and laid her down on her back on the ground which had moments ago been her prison. Seeing that he was alive, he inadvertently sighed with relief.
She's okay.
She's okay.
She's okay, thank God.
While he turned around and helped rescuing Hodgins, he didn't notice she had propped herself up with her elbows and was looking around, squinting with effort. She caught a glimpse of Jack, laying near and he seemed to be well – as well as he could be given the circumstances, that is; Angela and Zach were taking care of him.
When Temperance Brennan's gaze wandered back to her closest surroundings, she watched Booth crawl towards her and take a sit by her side.
She smiled at him. The concern disappeared from his face and it was for him like a sunrise after the longest night of a lifetime. He smiled back at her, completely lost since the moment their gazes locked.
Her eyes were incredibly, beautifully, unforgettably blue, and Seeley Booth was just glad he had been able to save them and the woman they were attached to.
