I'm a poor uni student. I own nothing except the lint in my pockets...
She had a habit of infuriating him, Tegan did. The Doctor had always prided himself on the fact he could stay level headed in any circumstance. Enter one upset Tegan Jovanka add an uncooperative TARDIS and allow to simmer. Serve at room temperature. What the Doctor didn't understand was the fact that he kept trying to do his best to take Tegan back to Heathrow like she asked every spare moment. It wasn't his fault that the TARDIS didn't want to go there.
He was beginning to feel guilty every time he set the controls and punched in the coordinates, he knew the old girl would land them elsewhere. He knew Tegan would blame him when he had nothing to do with it. He knew there'd be another shouting match that the children, Nyssa and Adric, would be able to hear in their rooms. He knew that neither of them would back down from their opinions, and he just knew that every time he would concede just before his vision would turn red with anger lest he accidentally did or said something he would regret.
Arguing with Tegan had quickly become a daily occurrence. She was stubborn, fiery, self-assured and too much like himself. When Adric died, in her grief she yelled at him for not going back to save him. He snapped back at her for not understanding. She claimed that he didn't care. He was silenced and hurt and for the first time in all thier arguments she looked ashamed of herself when she saw his face. Later they sat down together and actually talked it all through. Both of them were the better for it and it was a few days before another argument began. After she decided to stay onboard the TARDIS for a while though he wasn't trying to take her home to Earth anymore, their arguments didn't become anyless frequent. He began to wonder why that was. Was it simply the fact that they were too alike? Or was she trying to hide something from him which manifested itself in anger? And why did he feel the need to argue back?
It couldn't have been because they disliked each other. No, if that was the case then after that incident with Omega in Amsterdam she wouldn't have stated she was rejoining him and Nyssa and he wouldn't of let her. They were close friends when they weren't arguing. When being the operative word. But, he realised he had missed Tegan and their arguments during that period between accidentally leaving her at Heathrow and meeting up with her again in Amsterdam. Or was it an accident leaving her? Did he do it subconsciously?Once more the Mara possessed her, so worried about her own safety was he that he allowed himself to participate in the Snakedance in the hope that the dancers would be able to help him help her. In the end it was only him that could stand up against the Mara, and once more they argued, only it was the Mara he was arguing with. Not Tegan. Not this time.
He had to admit that when Nyssa left and Turlough joined the Doctor felt left out, Tegan now spent her time arguing with Turlough, not him. She didn't trust the Trion youth and let him know it loudly. Her reasonings should have been his, after all the boy was sent to kill him. Why should she fight his battles for him? She was just as protective of him as he was of her. Of all of his companions.Their biggest argument came when they faced the Daleks. He had to go and kill Davros, to stop him killing others. Tegan didn't understand. She yelled at him, asked him not to and then likened him to them, killing in cold blood. He couldn't get her to understand why he needed to kill the Dalek's creator but he went anyway. It cost their friendship, she left him. Ran away from him because of that. What hurt the most, apart from the rushed goodbye, was the fact that it had all been for nothing. He hadn't been able to kill Davros.
He'd barely had a chance to say goodbye. He'd miss their arguments. He'd miss her...
