Chapter 1- Faith
"Hard is trying to rebuild yourself, piece by piece, with no instruction book, and no clue as to where all the important bits are supposed to go."― Nick Hornby
"Faith?"
"Huh" Faith replied meeting her dad's grey eyes in the rear veiw mirror as he gazed at her cautiously causing Faith to avert her eyes.
"Faith I asked if you were alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine Dad." She assured him with a small smile going silent as she looked out the window at the blur that was Buffalo, New York.
They think I'm a ticking time bomb. Faith thought drumming her fingers on her thigh emitting a sigh.
"Faith, it's gonna be okay." Not allowing his daughter to retort he continued. "Think of this as a new adventure, no distractions, no-." Her dad inhaled sharply and fell silent.
A pregnant pause filled the car and Faith looked down at her lap biting her lip. Praying to someone that that her father would change the subject. Hoping that he followed the unspoken rule that some things should not be talked about. That they could go on pretending, they could keep waiting for the truths that they know will never come. A truth that Faith wasn't ready to face. Not now.
"Your mom wanted to be here to see you off, but..." He faltered trying to find an excuse for his wife.
"Work?" Faith asked giving him a small smile and he seemed relieved.
They were both silent for the rest of the drive and Faith let her mind wander. See me of as though this was a damn sleep away camp. She thought bitterly and she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
"Faith, here we are." Her dad said softly pulling her out of her thoughts.
"You belong here." Faith thought to herself as she got out of the car, "this is what you deserve." As she stepped out of the car she looked at her surroundings. In front of her was a huge Victorian house perched on an over sized lot. The house had yellow trim and a swing on a wrap around porch. Walking towards her were two women. One was an older nurse who introduced herself, giving Faith a sickly sweet smile that you'd give a cancer patient. The younger one arms were crossed as she seemed to be braced for trouble.
As she and her dad followed around she tried to pay attention to the tour, but she couldn't focus.
Finally they reached a bedroom. It was white and yellow, decorated with daisy's. Both of the sides of the room were identical clean and sterile. A twin bed, a dresser, and a tiny desk.
Noticing the older nurse's expression she knew it was time for her dad to go as Mrs. Talbot explained to her dad that he wouldn't be able to see her for a few days so she could get used to her new "home".
Hearing this her dad practically jumped and wrapped his arms around Faith who hugged back just as fiercely fighting back tears earning a look of disapproval from the younger nurse, Miss Van Dop. "This is only temporarily Faithy," her dad whispered in her ear running his hand through his daughter's ear length black curls, "You hear me Faithy? Everything is gonna be okay soon you'll be home with me." Faith smiled at the use of her childhood nickname and nodded . "Yeah it will."
After a few more minutes Faith was standing all alone in her room. She didn't have a roommate she was told at least for now. Sitting on the bed to her right she leaned against the wall and wrapping her arms around her legs. She just had to get through this. "No making friends with the other basket cases here no getting involved just get better and you can go home." She thought to herself laying head down on the pillow and letting herself drift of too sleep.
