At first, Inara was relieved. The shepherd's plan had worked, and Mal and Zoe were safe.
But the expression on Mal's face nearly reduced her to giggling.
He was so shocked to see her that she couldn't help but enjoy the moment.
Then an anger she didn't want to analyze took over.
None of this showed, of course, except in the fisting of one hand as it flew toward its target.
But Inara remembered her training, and her circumstance.
She was nothing if not professional.
At the last second before impact, the hand opened.
And Inara felt nothing but satisfaction.
