Run to You

He would return to this place. The wall was cold, but the markings that covered it held a thrum of life that lulled his heartbeat back to serenity.

"Why are you here again?" He smiled a little at the rough tone, unburying his lips and chin from the blanket wrapped around him.

"You know already, don't you?"

"Che. Scaredy-cat."

Well, not exactly. Bak smiled at the mamorigami's crass speech.

When he'd been just a child, he would come running here. Fou was often harsh, but he still knew that she would protect him. Watch over him. So his fears- whether ignited by AKUMA attacks, experiments gone awry, the anger of the researchers or his grandfather, or just a simple nightmare- were reason enough for him to come to this place.

"Another nightmare?" He shuffled around a little, moving until his cheek was pressed firmly against the wall. A hand absent-mindedly stroked inside of the other markings, thumb pausing above her pulse.

"Not really."

She acknowledged the real problem by her answer of silence. A pale, illusion-like depiction of her petite form materialized outside the wall, hands perching precociously on her slim hips.

"… I'll be fine, stupid Bak. It's not like you really have to worry. I'm only a machine."

"It was true. Fou… was a machine. A creation. The fact that only the higher-ups were privy to was that she was created with Innocence.

His… Innocence, in fact.

"Even if I reconstruct you… once you break, all your previous memories will disappear…"

All the times he'd run to her, their training sessions where she had (carefully) brutalized him for hours… Meetings, partings, and all the escapades, hijinx and mishaps in between. Every argument, and every tender moment. The projection's eyes softened a little, and after a moment, she wilted and moved to crouch in front of his curled form.

"Can't be helped, since it'll probably happen eventually."

The unstated continue of that being 'like this time.'

Those eyes that had, in the midst of their conversation, looked up to meet her saddening gaze, now looked away again. His thumb continued to stroke her weak pulse. Fou reached out, her knees coming down to meet the cold concrete as she stretched, and with that large hand, she gently petted his head. The static that held her weak projection together crackled through his hair inaudibly, standing it up on end, and in a quiet, unexpectedly tender act, she leaned over to place an airy kiss on his forehead. Azure eyes shot up to meet hers, which were back to their piercing gaze.

"Promise me something, just in case?" He nodded, and she smirked.

"Remember when you confessed to me about 15 years ago? You'd better do that again."

Mamorigami- lit. "protector god." In this case, Fou is a guardian diety.

AN: Well, enjoy it. My second addition to the D. Gray-man category, but at least this one's straight. *sighs* For those who like Lavi/Yuu, you may like to read my fic "Keeping a Secret."
