Game For Survival
She won a lot of things during her life. Until this moment, she didn't think that she would be playing for something.
The fact that it was a game of poker added an even bigger meaning to this. Was she playing to win money? An abnormal?
Whoever knew and knows Helen Magnus knows that if she acted according to her rules she would never play poker to win any abnormal. She appreciated them too much.
She was playing for her own life.
With each card she was realizing what she got into. She didn't want to think about anything, but thoughts were getting to the surface and she wasn't able to focus.
With each card she was realizing how great a truth Will had spoken when he claimed that the people with whom she put together weren't respectable.
She was watching her opponents. Every motion, every face. She wasn't realizing that she was staring at them sometimes as if only one blink of an eye could change everything. Even if she lived a life longer than any other mortal, she didn't want to die. Her job wasn't done yet.
A drop of sweat was running down her forehead. She wasn't even able to think about how long she had been sitting there. It seemed like eternity. Her hands were trembling. When a man's voice broke the silence, she jumped.
„I hope you are not nervous," one of the men said ironically.
„Ehm, no," Helen cleared her throat.
„That's fine, good for you," the man said and his focus went back to his cards.
„All in one of the men said and he pushed the pile of chips into the middle of the table.
„ I call," Helen said and felt all of the gazes of the men , who were sitting around the table.
„Are you sure?" one man asked.
„Yes," she answered confidently and waited when every player performed his turn, she laid her cards on the table and took a deep breath.
She survived. She won her life.
A big thank to my friend Passionate Cec who was my beta reader for this story. Thank you.
