To anyone who didn't know the pair, Aaron Hotchner being over protective about Spencer Reid was uncalled for. It was normal for a Unit Chief to be protective over his subordinates but not nearly to the degree that Hotch was.
To everyone who did know them, however, they knew that there was every reason for Hotch to act the way he was.
Reid always got himself into trouble, most of the time without even trying. Stepping outside his apartment seemed to be a hazard nowadays and Reid always sulked that it wasn't fair.
Hotch wanted to keep the younger man safe from everything in the world, to keep the innocence that was wholly Reid intact. He tried harder everyday to make sure that Reid was alive to ramble on statistics that no one needed to know or to quote Einstein level books he read when he was six.
When on cases, Hotch kept a closer eye on Reid, especially out on the field. As they separated themselves into hotel rooms, Hotch made sure to have Reid with him. He needed to hold the young genius in his arms every night just to make sure that everything was as it should be. The sound of gentle breathing filled his dreams and the feel of soft lips kissing random patches of skin fueled his lion like persona.
Seeing Reid laughing and smiling and happy makes Hotch feel stronger than he ever has before and he would do anything to make sure that nothing could harm Reid.
He really had his work cut out for him.
