The Girl Outside the Window

Sometimes, when Jacob looked out the window of his room, he thought he saw Leah.

It was crazy, of course. Leah had been dead for six months.

But Jacob still thought he saw her face.

Whenever he saw her, she looked lost, her eyes flitting around nervously, sometimes landing on Jacob. When her eyes met Jacob's, he could feel her staring into his soul, picking him apart.

Sometimes, when Jacob saw her, he wanted to talk to her. He knew she wasn't really there, but he still longed to know where she was now, what being dead was like, if she was happy.

He would press his face against the glass of the window and whisper "Leah…" but as soon as he said her name, she would disappear.

Sometimes, Jacob thought he saw Leah outside his window.

And he wasn't so sure he was just imagining it.
