"James, you reach the Astronomy Tower first and set the first lot off while - "
"No, that's an impractical solution, Sirius. It would be best if he waited till midnight, and then - "
"I don't want to wait till midnight!" James and Sirius whispered together, and then broke out into laughter while Remus hung his head in surrender.
"Fine, but don't blame me if you two get caught."
"Us both? We're all a part of this, Moony my friend!"
While the three planned their latest prank in the dead of the night, Peter snuck out of the dormitory, invisible to the world in his animagus form. He squeezed beneath the portrait hole and scurried off towards the perpetually leaky girl's bathroom on the third floor, concealing himself in the shadows as he did.
"Peter, darling. You're here again!" Myrtle's disembodied voice echoed through the cubicles and he wondered how she'd been able to hear him when he had been so silent.
"I see you're making a habit of visiting me," she whispered lasciviously as he transformed back into a boy.
Peter blushed.
"Oh, but I so like you as a little rat!" Myrtle pouted as she floated around him, playing with his tousled blond hair.
"Really? I could change back, you know, if you'd like me to," he stuttered, nervous and tongue tied. He wondered what it was about her that pulled him to her every night and haunted his memories every day.
She giggled then, a loud high-pitched cackle that made Peter want to plug his ears and drown himself in her sparkling eyes.
How was it that she looked so much more alive that he did when it was, in fact, she who was dead?
"Live a little, sweetheart," she laughed, zipping through him again and again as he trembled with the cold and a hundred other emotions he couldn't quite put a finger on.
"I feel like I have no one," he whispered miserable to her as her happiness dragged him deeper and deeper into depression.
"You have me, Peter. Isn't that enough for you? Look at what I have!" she wailed suddenly, a long mournful wail that caused the hair on his arms to rise and had his ears pleading for mercy.
But deep down, he knew she was right. He may have friends that made him feel invisible, but she had no one at all. No one but him.
And that is precisely what made him gravitate towards her every day; she made him feel something no one else ever had.
She made him feel wanted.
