It was late in the HQ. Most people were asleep. Most. John was one of the few that was still awake. It was quiet at night. The perfect time to read. They had a few books around the HQ. Including Harry Potter. So John was sitting at his desk, feet prompt up on it, reading in peace. It helped him relax. Marcos, Lorna and Clarice went to bed early. Clarice as she was tired all the time, even though she was only in the first trimester of her pregnancy, and Marcos and Lorna went to bed early because they had a three-year-old that had kept them running around all day. They had moved away from the old bank about a year ago and were now in an abandoned school in south Atlanta. It was bigger than their old HQ and they could take on a lot more refugees. They even had more mutants that had abilities that could ward off humans. They were also being a lot more careful. And they had more places that they could get supplies from.
John had been reading for about twenty minutes when there was a soft knock on the door frame. John looked up to see Clarice in the door way. She was in her pajamas with her feet in trainers and a hoodie half-zip up over one of his old shirts. John could also see the very small baby bump. Unless you knew that Clarice was pregnant, you didn't notice the bump. "Hey." John said quietly.
"Are you coming to bed?" Clarice asked, leaning heavily against the door frame.
"Can't sleep?" He asked. Clarice shook her head. John slipped the book mark in his book and stood up. He walked over to Clarice and slipped his arm around her waist.
Clarice cuddled against John in their bed as soon as he climbed in. "read to me?" Clarice asked. John chuckled and grabbed his book again. He started reading out loud, quietly, just loud enough for Clarice to hear him. It only took five minutes before she was asleep next to him. After reading for a little while longer, John put the book on the bedside table and turned off the lamp. He settled next to her and watched her sleep before drifting off himself.
