Who really is Hyuuga Neji? A teammate's insight on the Hyuuga prodigy.

He was a genius. The number one rookie before Uchiha Sasuke. The master of the Byakugan, and probably the most conceited, emotionless bastard in the whole of Konoha—Sasuke is still competing with him for that title though. He mastered a secret jutsu of the main branch, defeated one of Orochimaru's most powerful Nins and still kept his hair very beautiful along the way. (I seriously wonder how on earth he still kept his hair very smooth.) Although he is already branded as a genius and a lot more names, Neji is still so much more for me. For the villagers of Konoha sees him as the boy who lost his father protecting Hyuuga Hiashi, the boy who hated the Hyuuga main branch, and the boy who ranted about faith and destiny to Uzumaki Naruto but was later defeated by him. But to me, Neji is not just a fighter but also a sparring partner, a teammate, and a friend.
"I don't know how much it hurt that your dad was killed a long time ago but… thinking that destiny is all decided because of that is a huge mistake!"
He changed. He doesn't judge people too much anymore nor talk about destiny. His fight with Naruto and learning the truth about his father's death changed him a lot and I'm really grateful of that day (no matter how disappointed I was when he lost). Sure he can still be an anti-social jerk at times but that's just what makes Neji… Neji. And even I can't help but admit that I like that part of him.
"Students, what are your goals in life?"
"Feh, Don't have one."
Looking back at the times of our first missions, it's still hardly believable that the Hyuuga Neji and I became this close. My main goal was to be as great as Tsunade-sama while he… feh, I don't even know what his actual goal in life is (if he has one) but one thing made the both of us the same: we wanted to get stronger. And that want brought him to ask me to be his training partner for the Chuunin exam. That want brought us close, training day and night, as long as he wants. So maybe that's why I felt so lonely when he suddenly went off to retrieve Uchiha-san. If Lee hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known that he left Konohagakure. I wouldn't have known the reason why he came back, bloody and half-dead.
But even though seeing him in that state made me want to cry every second, I still stayed by him.
"Tenten, your aim was a little off. Focus."
Because no matter how much of a bastard he can be or no matter how much he hurts me when he "implies" I'm weak, I will still and always stand by his side.
"Neji, my eternally powerful student, you must regain your youth by running 200 laps with Lee!"
"Gai-sensei! Hai!"
"Hn."
Because I care about him.
"Neji, you want to go see Tsunade-sama?"
"Sorry. Not interested."
Because I am his partner.
"…you don't even have any scratch on yourself…"
"….I used up too much chakra."
Because I am his friend.
"Neji, are you alright? Neji!"
Because I am his teammate.
