a/n: No backstory to this. No one's ever written the end of the end for these two. I'm sad enough right now to do it.

Lay with Me Tonight ----

The last tears of desperation had been cried and gone and all the hopelessness that was left to feel had been felt and all was quiet. They sat together, wrapped in themselves calm and steady, ready to take on the last part of the journey that had been years in the making. It would be a slow ending, drawn out as long as the life support would hold them in their beloved ship, lost and alone in nowhere, just as they had wanted.

"Are you scared?" she asked.

"No, I've got you with me," he answered, his voice strained with the pain of imminent loss.

"Nothing really matters in the end, you know," she whispered, hoping that some part of her soul would believe the words.

"All the worries sever," he said, kissing her cheek tenderly. She smiled a smile that caressed her face, wrinkling her eyes at the edges and pulling taut the soft skin of her lips.

"I'm going to miss the sunrises," she sighed.

"Not as much as I'll miss your smiles," he mourned.

"Don't be afraid for me, Han," she said quietly. "We all fall down forever."

He held his arms around her more tightly than before, burying his face in her softly grayed hair. It wasn't often that they got time alone to enjoy each other. Their life had been spent in a series of fleeting moments, always living for the good of the people, never the good of themselves. He regretted all of those times that he could have stopped to spend being with her.

"I love you," he choked out, knowing that he could never make up for all of those lost moments.

"I know," she grinned. "You loved me as much as I always loved you."

She laid her hand on top of his, running her thumb back and forth in a comforting rhythm that matched in time with the hushed warning signal of failing systems and realizations of their own mortality. It wouldn't have been much longer on Coruscant anyway, they were both old and at the end of their time.

Neither wanted to go without the other. There was too much pain in thinking of being alone, even for a short while.

"You are not alone," he whispered, closing his heavy eyes.

Her smile faltered a little as the urgent need to sleep washed over her senses like nothing she'd ever felt before. She was tired, so tired…

Her eyes drifted shut as well, the darkness taking her breath. She laid still in his arms as the last of their lives faded as quickly as they had begun.

And they were not alone.

a/n: The majority of my evening has been spent in tears. This little piece is what came out of my sadness. This whole story is based off of a song titled 'Not Alone' by Patty Griffin. Possibly the most lonely song I've ever heard in my life.

Here'sthe snip that started this story (and titled it too) in case you're interested:

She says you are not alone
Laying in the light
Put out the fire in your head
And lay with me tonight

Please, ridicule my emotion in whatever way you see fit.

It's a fanfiction sin to read without reviewing.
