*CHAPTER ONE: ElyAnn-Cailin McGregor*

Have you ever felt that you deserved more than what you already have? That you, for instance, weren't born in the right era? That you should've been born in another family? That you had something strange, mysterious and almost mystical about yourself? You seem to see things others don't. You're way of understanding is, also, different and, strangely, those surrounding you always end up saying that you're thinking too much. How can someone think too much? It's the main difference between human beings and animals! However, people don't get your point and then, finally, you give up trying to be understood. You try to live a "normal life". Under the accusing eyes of the crowd, you're, at last, as any other people are. Oh! Some things you say almost get you caught, from time to time, but you always found a way out. While humans grow enough to understand you, your life becomes an under cover one and all you can do is dream. You dream that you'll find a stone circle that could bring you back in 1745. You dream to receive a letter, by owl mail, that'll invite you to study in a great school of wizarding and sorcery.

I was thinking of that. I was just reaching the "it doesn't exist and you'll be stuck here forever" part when I heard a familiar beep in my left ear. "Hello, my name is ElyAnn-Cailin. How may I help you?" I said, as usual. And there we go again, another fifteen minutes of struggling before the client, unsatisfied and mad, hangs up on me. This really isn't my day! First, I got into a fight with my colleague, than those hysterical clients and, finally, that director who stood me up again. I was supposed to have lunch with him. He wanted to offer me a new job. I'll never get that appointment and I'll never have the promotion I'm expecting! What the hell am I doing here? Working in a bank! That's not me, I'm an artist! I should be singing, dancing, acting…

" Ely, you're sleeping!" says Maria in a bored voice

" No, I'm not! I'm trying a new yoga technique to relax at work! What are you doing for lunch? Want to go grab something on a terrace? Perhaps on the Jacques-Cartier place?

- Sounds good, I'll call Isobel!"

Maria Richer and Isobel Renett. My two colleagues and best friends. I'm lucky to have them here with me otherwise I might have gone mad! They've known each other for fifteen years and I've known them for two years. It was hard to get into their little circle but, once the irritation has gone, they're really nice. I say irritation because they have this strange bound that you manage to get only after many years of friendship. It's hard to understand from an outsider point of view. It used to make me feel uncomfortable, as if I was always excluded. Maria with her square cut blond hair and blue eyes, Isobel with her shoulder length black hair and black eyes and me, with my waist length red hair and brown eyes. We don't have much in common, besides the height. The three of us are really short; I'm the tallest one with my 5'3". They're both much thinner than I am, even if Maria is a little more chubby than Isobel. I'm far from being fat and I'm proud of my 130 pounds. It's just not the 119 recommended by doctors. I've been starving myself with all kind of diets and, now, I've had enough! I finally managed to love myself the way I am and never want to talk about diets anymore!

The terrace is really full! Every office in Montreal must be empty! After having to wait for twenty minutes, we finally order three tuna salads. The weather's hot, I think it's the hottest summer I've ever known. "So, how's your day 'till now?" That question became a ritual for us. Every time we get to have lunch together, Isobel asks the same question. After two years, I finally get the nerves to ask why. " Because lunch is the only time we have to get rid of our morning's frustration. It makes room for new ones in the afternoon. If we don't do that, we might go crazy and, working in the customer's service department, it would not be a good thing!

- Hum, it makes sense!

- Of course, it does! So, Ely, want to start?

- All right, but I'm warning you, you might not have time to empty your bags of complaints! I'm having a dreadful day! You know that director who wanted to take me out for lunch for a month! Well, he stood me up again today! I called him back to make sure everything were fine for noon, I said that I couldn't wait to hear what kind of job he wanted to offer me. He said that he didn't feel like talking business today. I said that we might do this some other time. He said yes but didn't schedule another lunchtime! I sincerely think I'll never get that position! I'm disappointed and angry at the same time. I thought I had a chance!

- Oh you did! You might've got the position, if you didn't call it a job.

- Huh?

- Oh come on Ely! You didn't catch his drift?

- What Maria's trying to say, in a really confusing way, is that he wanted to flirt with you. There isn't such thing as a job. He only wanted to find a good reason to have lunch with you!

- It's not true! He said he had an interesting position to offer me, working under him.

- Working under him! A position!"

Obviously, Maria found that quite funny, I didn't.

" Did he say it was a job?

- Well, no. Not clearly. OH MY GOD! I'm such a dumbass! Now, I'll never get a promotion. Makes the day worst than I thought!

- You're not a dumbass. You made everything clear from the start. You're not interested in him and now he knows it. You're not, right?

- He's quite cute but no, he's not what I'm looking for. That's IF I'm looking for someone. I don't want to get involved in a serious relationship. In fact, I don't want to get involved in any kind of relationship.

- Still thinking of him?

- Yes, sometimes"

***

The day's almost over! Less than thirty minutes to go! "Ely, care for a little drink after work?

- No thank you, Iso. I'll go straight home. You know, the dog needs a walk, the cat needs some food and I need some money!

- ElyAnn-Cailin McGregor! Are you telling me that you'll spend your Friday night with your dog, your cat and your empty bank account? What's his name?

- My account doesn't have a name?

- Don't you play the funny girl with me! I'm talking about the male you'll be seeing tonight!

- In fact, there are two of them. A beautiful blond guy named Jester and a cute little black one called Salem!

- Come on Ely! This is getting serious! When is the last time you saw someone?

- Maria, I'm not ready yet. The Philip's story was a really tough time for me and I'm not willing to have a serious relationship with a guy. Just not yet.

- Who's talking about seriousness? I'm talking about flirting! Dating!

- I'm doing both! I just don't feel like having one night stands with losers I picked up in a bar!

- You're desperate!

- No, she's right!

- Thank you Iso!

- It's true, if she wants to become a nun, it's her business!

- Ah! Never mind! I'm going home!"
