He was always either really late, or really early when it came to meeting up on the hill.
This time, it was the latter of the two.
She saw him under the tree, huddled up.
"So," she began, "you're early this time."
The remark made him flinch a little, and he seemed to be struggling with something.
"Temari," he replied, lying back down and closing his eyes. "I didn't know you were already here."
She raised her eyebrow. "Yeah, I could tell."
She sat down. "What was that all about?"
"What do you mean?"
"That surprised reaction when I greeted you. Since when did that ever happen?"
He opened one eye to look at her. "'You're early this time' isn't much of a greeting."
"Don't go smart ass on me, Nara," she snapped. "What are you trying to hide?"
He closed his eyes. "I'm not hiding anything."
"And I'm not going to smash your face in if you don't tell me," came her sarcastic reply.
"I'm glad we understand each other."
She sighed. Stubborn kid.
"Nothing you say is going to convince me that you're not hiding anything."
"I figured."
"So tell me."
He didn't reply for a long time. "No."
She smirked. "At least you've admitted now that there is something you're not telling me about."
Shikamaru gave a defeated sigh. "Whatever, I'm still not saying anything."
"Tell me."
"I already said I won't."
"Tell me."
"Leave me alone, woman."
"Tell me."
"Alright!" Shikamaru said. "Troublesome woman."
He sat up and opened one of the pockets in his flak jacket, taking out a small notebook.
"I write."
She eyed the book curiously. "Write what?"
He put it away. "That's for me to know, and for you to never find ou-"
She tackled him and used her body to pin him down.
He blushed slightly. "Dammit woman, get off me."
She took out the book and opened it.
"Hey!"
She read aloud. "A clear star filled night, a beautifully lit moon. What more could you ask for? For someone to share it with you..."
He groaned.
She flicked through the little book, skimming through it all.
"Thoughts and poetry," she said teasingly. "I never thought you were the kind."
He sat there silently.
She smiled. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone."
"You better not."
She laughed. "A secret between the two of us then, but on one condition."
He sighed. "What?"
"Can I keep this?"
End.
