HEADCANON AS TO WHY PETE TYLER KNEW ROSE TYLER WOULD BE SUCKED INTO THE VOID (THEREFORE HOW HE KNEW TO SAVE HER)
Yeah this always confused me, so I made it up.
The Doctor knew what was going to happen. Of course he did. He saw all of time and space, he saw the timelines, he saw-
He saw her separated from her.
Because it was a fixed point.
Because it always had to happen.
So he pulled Pete Tyler aside. Even though the Doctor knew this man could not truly accept Rose as his own daughter, he had to be the one to save her. Fighting to keep the tears out of his eyes and the emotion out of his throat, he looked at the other man.
"Listen closely, Mr. Tyler, because we don't have much time," the Doctor started.
"Wha's this about, then?" Pete asked. "We don't exactly 'ave time fo' small talk."
"This is important," the Doctor said. "This is about your sort-of daughter. This is about Rose."
Pete went to interrupt, but the Doctor spoke over him. "As a Timelord I can feel and see ahead certain events that have to stay as they are. Usually time can be rewritten and changed up but sometimes there are fixed points. There is about to be one. This is that Rose Tyler will almost fall into the Void, and you will save her. Then I will close the wall between worlds and-" And I'll never see her again. He mentally shook himself. "Before she falls I will try to send her to your world, but she'll come back. You must let this happen, no matter what Mickey or Jackie will try. All these events must happen, or else the universe will-well, it's not good."
"But tha' means-"
The Doctor felt the pain of the upcoming events bubble up. "It means that she'll be on one side and I'll be on the other and it'll be that way forever. She can never see me again and I'll never see her again. That's how it has to be." His mouth had betrayed him. He didn't mean to say all of that, especially to Pete Tyler.
"You love her, don't you."
"I-"
"An' she loves you." Pete sighed. "This is goin' ta tear ya both apart. Fine. How do I save her?"
The Doctor explained what he needed to do, and stressed the crucial importance of timing. Every word hurt him, knowing that he couldn't save the woman he loved himself. Knowing he had minutes until he would be separated from her forever. Never again would he properly hold her, never again would he see that mischievous grin when they found trouble to make. He wished he would've told her how he felt. They could've had so much time. That was the irony of it all. Even a Timelord couldn't use the time he had properly.
They went back to the others and everything played out like he knew it would. When she came back ("I fink this is the on-switch.") he was angry. Not at her, but himself. He wished he could change things, but he couldn't. So he watched as Rose Tyler, his beloved Bad Wolf was sucked into the Void and saved by another man.
He wished he could cry.
He wished he could show any emotion.
Even if he knew it was going to happen.
But without Rose Tyler, the pink and yellow girl, he was nothing.
An empty shell.
A broken man.
