Okay so just as a side note, this is my first ever ff. And I do not own anything related to the cycle.
This scene follows directly after the end of Brisingr.
Eragon watched as Saphira's breathing deepened. He sighed as he turned away from her to look at the city of Feinster. It had been several hours since the conclusion of the battle but Eragon was to troubled to sleep. His mind raced with the remnants of the shades thoughts as they plied at his sanity. He entered the city and, slowly meandering through the dark streets, he made his way to the room where they slew the shade. As he entered the room he saw a lone cloaked figure standing in the centre. Wary now, Eragon quietly approached the stranger pushing forward with his mind as he did so. It was Arya. Eragon mind retreated as he had no intention of invading Ayra's privacy. However he was surprised to find Ayra's mind reaching for him. He showed no resistance as Ayra entered his mind. She was looking at memories of his childhood. He felt her slowly drifting through them as she passed from one to the other. She made her way onto more recent memories. She lingered on the one of her rescue. Eragon did not react as she went through all his memories of her which included all of his feelings for her.
Suddenly she withdrew from his mind, a cold emptiness filled him. She slowly turned to face him. Her eyes chilled him.
"I cannot love you." She whispered in the ancient language.
Even as he stared into her eyes, Eragon slowly fell to his knees. She continued.
"I am broken Eragon."
Eragon's eyes, now filled with tears, glanced up at her confused. Ayra turned back again, staring into the night. Eragon, fuelled by his confusion and frustration, stood quickly, grabbed her arm and turned her to face him. Eragon boldly pushed his mind into hers. Initially she resisted, but then her resistance vanished and Eragon entered her mind where he found…nothing. He could feel no emotion coming from her. No sadness, no pain, no love. Memories of these feelings existed, yes but nothing now. The emptiness inside of her was so vast that Eragon had to somewhat withdraw his mind for fear of losing himself within it.
I'm dying Eragon.
No!
How can I not feel and still live?
Eragon thoughts raced for a solution.
Eragon you have to let me go.
In her mind Eragon saw her reach for a death spell. He watched as the words started to form on her lips.
Suddenly a rather elegant solution came to Eragon's mind.
He kissed her.
