Malfoy's had always dipped into the dark arts. Generations had served Dark Lords and been very highly regarded in the sense of such things. And Lucius was no exception. His father, Abraxas, had taught him from the raw age of five that he was to be a fearsome dark wizard. He was also expected to be a proper gentleman, an excellent student, and a well respected member of the wizarding community.

" But father, how am I to be well respected and a dark wizard?" Young Lucius had asked when told these things.

" You never show your true colors son, a true Malfoy can be very many things and be respected as all." Abraxas had answered, taking a puff from his cigar.

So when the time came and he went away to Hogwarts, he was very well guarded. He said the right things, hung out with the right people, and became very well respected among his fellow Slytherins. He even had friends, though they were more like minions that did his bidding.

In his second year he met a boy name Severus Snape, a first year who was regularly avoided by many. He was greasy and snobbish but Lucius had to hand it to him, He was a genius. Their first encounter was a tense one to say the least.

"Lucius Malfoy, nice to meet you." Said boy held out his hand in greeting though took it back when his offering was ignored.

"What's wrong with you? Do you not talk?" He asked, brow furrowing as he leaned down next to the other boys' face.

"There is nothing wrong with me, Mr. Malfoy. I simply do not wish to speak with you. I have more important things to do. " The black haired boy replied glancing up momentarily at the other before returning to his book.

Snape's had their own legacy just as the Malfoy's had. Severus' father had reared him to excel in all academic fields and such fields did not include one Lucius Malfoy, who was interrupting his study time.

" Ignoring me is not best for you, Snape." The blond stated neutrally.

" Bothering me is not best for yo, Malfoy." Came the agitated reply as he quickly stood with his books in hand and turned to leave.

" Fine, don't be my friend. Though it's not like you have much to chose from." Malfoy said, watching the other preteen pause in his exit and turn to look at him.

" And what, exactly, could a popular person such as yourself want with an outsider like me?" He asked though he feared he already knew the answer. Second day there and he had been asked to do many students homework in return for 'friendship'.

" Eh, call it an investment." He smiled slightly, rather uncharacteristically though, and explained. " You are smarter then many in years above us, that kind of knowledge can translate very nicely into real life situations. So, I'd rather have you with me, then against me."

Snape snorted at this," So you feel threatened by me?" He asked, an eyebrow raising in question

Now it was Lucius' turn to snort, "Oh, please, I could easily beat you if need be. I'd just like to have the back up in case I need it."

Snape eyed him warily for a moment before nodding. "Alright."

Malfoy smirked and walked the few feet distancing them and again presented his hand to seal their deal. His smirk widened slightly as the other boy accepted and they shook hands.
