AN: I blame the hot Sicilian sun cooking my brain today for this little piece that came out of nowhere. So...enjoy? And please tell me what you think. :D

And if I die before I wake…

Sam doesn't remember where he first learned that childish prayer - because the words are pretty gloomy. It reminds him of some nursery songs that he knows were first spoken in the times of black plague. And yet, the children still use them in their play, not giving a thought to their meanings. But Sam is not a child anymore. He hasn't been one for a long time.

And if I die…

What could he wish for, if Death were to come after him in his sleep? That would probably be one of the gentlest ways to go in his experience. And he is in the unique position to actually be able to speak about his deaths. Plural. Well, maybe not so unique, his brother is champion of that particular category, courtesy of that damned Trickster.

And if…

He still went down there? He found his wish: that going to hell won't be a repeat experience, but he is not so certain he's a good man. He did let go of his faith a long time ago, too battered by the blows his life threw at him one after the other. Who could reassure him that dying will bring him the peace and quiet his tired soul sometimes yearned for?

Sheets rustle as a body shifts in the bed near the one he's occupying and Sam's thoughts are interrupted by a sleepy voice.

"Man, cut it out and go to sleep! I can hear you thinking from over here" the glare the oldest Winchester is attempting while half asleep is more amusing that intimidating, but Sam hides his smile and pretends to be suitably chastised."Sorry, man. "

"Whatever. Bitch." Dean is once again with his back turned to his younger sibling.

"Back at you. Jerk." And Sam knows that Dean is probably right and thinking at two o'clock in the morning after an exhausting hunt is not something he should attempt. Still one more thought grabs his attention before he lets sleep conquer him.

And if I die before I wake, wherever I end up I hope that Dean is with me.

The end.
