Turning Tables
Summary: And just when you thought that your friends would always have your backs… the harsh truth in life would only say otherwise. The world isn't ready yet for people like them and even so-called "friends" can go astray. (Klainetana friendship)
A/N: A drabble that suddenly came up when I was around Tumblr and saw vague spoilers for 2x18 while listening to Gwyneth's version of Turning Tables.
Kurt saw her at the corner of the dim-lit classroom, looking outside the window that was silently overlooking the darkening sky. He bit his lip as he slowly made his way towards the girl with his arms crossed over his chest, his footsteps light and careful, just like he was when he approached the upset girl.
She looked back when she heard someone entering the room and Kurt could see that she had been crying just as he was as well. Her eyes and nose were red but her eyes held strongly as she did when she screamed at Puckerman only just a few minutes ago. "You had your chance at freedom… at peace and safety… why did you come back?" Her voice shook, "Why did you come back to this?"
"…as if we don't have enough gay guys already."
"Oh, so are you saying it is okay for gay girls but not for gay guys?" She snapped.
"Dude, anybody can see that gay girls are alright!"
"And how are gay guys different from gay girls?"
"It's totally different!"
"Tell me, Puckerman. Are you just a douchebag? Or are you totally a homophobe to spat it even in front of your friends' faces?"
Puck could only look away as he muttered something inaudible. From the corner, Kurt and Blaine lower their gazes as they held on to each other's hands in support. Their fingers intertwined in tight grips of fear, Kurt biting his lower lip to prevent himself from reacting on what he had just felt… betrayal.
Kurt could only smile at the corner of his lips as a fresh batch of tears fell from his eyes, "Because, here, I have friends like you." Santana bit her lower lip in anger and frustration as she swiftly wiped her tears away. Kurt surprised her when he grabbed her by the elbows and crushed her into a tight embrace. Santana was taken back when she felt Kurt's shoulder shake.
"Thank you, Santana." Kurt whispered, his voice quivering. "It was hard… that even people who I call "friends" had thoughts like that. It would've been harder if you hadn't defended me and Blaine… again." He added with a chuckle as he lightly pulled away. "Its friends like you that make us go on with this."
Santana's brows were still furrowed as she lowered her gaze when she looked away. "But we're alright… let's go back." The brunet smiled and she felt Kurt taking her hand to lead her out of the classroom.
Santana slightly flinched when she felt Kurt's cold and sweaty palms against hers, hands that were still scared but still holding on tightly – a sign of courage. This only made her even more terrified that despite Kurt's words of standing up and facing the bullies, that despite Kurt and Blaine's courage and strength, the world wasn't very much ready yet of people like them, that in the end, the possibility of even friends would turn their backs towards you.
Santana could only hold on to Kurt's hand in refuge as she allowed the brunet to lead her back out into the harsh world.
"Next time I'll be braver,
I'll be my own savior,
Standing on my own two feet."
