I tried to be gentle as I picked her up. But I was in a hurry. Her blood was pouring out in what seemed like waves and all I could think about was getting her to her time. Where they could perform miracles and save her life. The well was close; she had been on her way home when we were attacked. It took only a few steps and I was there, standing on the wooden ledge, looking down into a darkness that may claim my soul. Without turning, I yell for Sango and Miroku to watch Shippo for me. We will be right back. They yell for me to hurry, worry clear in their voices. Though I do not think they are fully aware of the extent of Kagome's injuries.
Then I close my eyes and jump. The bottom of the well rushes towards me but I never reach it. Suddenly the magic of the well takes control and we are pulled out of time and moved along it. Just as we are about to reach Kagome's time and leave the magic, the Shikon shards around Kagome's neck start to glow. The colors of the blue vortex that surrounds us starts to slow until they come to a stop altogether. Not only do the swirling colors stop but so does the blood flow from Kagome's wounds. Without the blood hide behind the vastness of the wound is evident. My breath catches. There is no way even the miracles in Kagome's world can save her this time.
Slowly I lay her down on the now solid blue that surrounds us. When she is laying before me her eyes open. Brown warmth looks up at me and there is no pain visible.
"Inu Yasha," she says, her voice strong, "I needed you to know… I needed to tell you that I…"
Placing my finger over her lips, I cut her off. This is a confession I don't need to hear. "I know."
She smiles a sad smile. The smile that says she understands my mind better than I do. "I don't think you do. I need you to know that I will always love you, no matter what."
"Keh," I scoff, "There is no time for this now. I need to get you to your doctors so they can help you."
Wrapping her thin fingers around mine she pulls my hand close to her heart. It is only then that I realize the reassuring sound of her heartbeat hasn't been heard since I entered this place with her.
"Kagome!" I yell. As if hollering will hold her to me. Taking my hand back from her, I grip her by the
shoulders, shaking her until her head lolls.
"Inu Yasha," this time the words are barely above a whisper. "Take care of yourself."
I shake my head in denial. "You are supposed to take care of me," I can't believe how soft my whisper is. But the vortex is already starting to move again. With a violent tug, I pull Kagome close, cradling her to my chest. That is how we enter the well in her time. Before the roaring from the time travel has even left my ears I hear her take her last breath and I know that no magic will ever bring her back.
I rock back and forth, cradling her body to me as her blood soaks the floor of the well. It is in that moment that I realize. She told me she loved me but I never told her. Never told her that she always held my heart, even when I thought I would love Kikyo forever. The thought sinks in and my howls fill the air. And I wish, with all my strength that our last moment out of time could have lasted forever.
