Lily was walking towards the Gryffindor tower with tears
springing to her eyes. James Potter was shocked to see her leave like that. He got up and ran after her. By the time he caught up with her, she was sitting in the Gryffindor common room. He spoke no words as he grabbed her and hugged her with everything he had in him. Lily couldn't help but to sob on his shoulder. She let everything out that she could. All the emotions she could muster. It was all laid out on James's shoulder in the form of soggy tears.
James knew Lily had been going through a tough time, and although she was his girlfriend, she wouldn't tell him why. But he tried to understand, and be as supportive as possible. Everytime she was crying and needed to be hugged, he was there. Everytime she was exhausted, and just wanted to be alone, he wasn't there physically, but emotionally, he was standing by her side every step of the way.
One day, after Transfiguration, James was heading back to the Gryffindor common room with Sirius. What he saw upon his arrival was not a very welcoming sight. Lily was sitting by herself. But she wasn't crying, she looked scared. "Good luck, man. Must be that time of the month again." James gave Sirius a look as he walked away. He approached Lily cautiously.
"Hey Lil. Is everything ok?" James placed his hand on her shoulder, causing Lily to jump.
"Oh God," she whispered, barely audible.
"Lil? What's going on?" James was scared now. Lily normally told him everything, but not this. The thing that was causing her the most pain in her life, he knew nothing about.
"James, I didn't want to tell you yet, but…." She dropped her head into her hands and began to weep.
"Lily Mortar. Right now. Tell me what's going on. Whatever it is, you and I will be all right, we can get through anything, together. But you have to tell me."
"I know, I know. God James. One stupid mistake that will change our lives forever."
"What is it Lily?" He didn't have any more patience.
Lily looked towards him, and he saw a flash of fright pass behind her eyes. What is she scared of, he thought to himself, Me? "James." Gulp. "I'm, I'm pregnant." She looked at her hands, then towards him. James was caught speechless.
"But…but….it" he stammered "It was only once. One night. You can't be pregnant. God, are you sure?" Lily could only nod. "What are we going to do? What the hell are we going to do?"
"James, please don't get upset," she said in the voice that would always soothe James, no matter what the problem was. "Now, I've thought about this for awhile, and, and I think that I should have the baby. I want this baby, I don't care how much crap I'm put through."
"Of course, Lily. This baby is ours. Forever."
"Yes. It is. And that's what else I was thinking about."
"What's that?"
Lily was down on one knee. "James Potter, will you marry me?"
Oh God, thought James. He hesitated for a second then realized he was an idiot. He loved her, he had known that from the very first time they met. They were soulmates. And she was going to have a baby. Her baby. His baby. Their baby. He didn't hesitate a second more. "Yes Lily. I will marry you." She cried out in joy and jumped up, putting her arms tightly around his neck. She kissed him, her tongue dancing with his, her soul celebrating with his.
"I love you, James." She whispered in his ear. "Forever."
"I love you, Lily Potter." He whispered back. "Forever and beyond."
