Chapter 1 : Kayla

I sighed. "I wanted to go to Dairy Queen!" I whined, then smirked. Kidding. Partially."

Sam rolled his eyes. "Whatever, babe." he replied. I sighed. He never got my humor anymore. There was a silence. Then, Sam spoke. "So, I, uh, saw you with Adam again."

I was the one to roll my eyes this time. "He's only a friend! I can hangout with him if I want to!"

"No you can't!" Sam said louder than necessary.

"I -" I started to protest.

"I love you, Kayla!" Sam cried suddenly. He stopped the car, turned, and pressed his lips against mine.

I jerked and pulled away. "GET OFF ME!" I shrieked.

"Mmm….." Was all he replied, still kissing me. I pushed against his weight, vying for the door. Sam pulled away, anger flaring in his eyes.

"No. No!" I whispered, knowing what was coming. Sam raised his hand and I cringed. Then, he hit me. I felt the burning pain and stinging searing through my cheek. He raised his hand again and slapped me once more. "Please, let me go." I whispered again. Tears streamed down my face. Finally, he opened the door and told me to get out. Grabbing my purse, I bolted into a run and took off. I made it to the door of my house. I rang the doorbell, realizing I had left my key inside, and collapsed.

"HE WHAT?!" my mom shrieked. I winced, holding the ice pack to my sore face.

"It's not that bad!" I said frantically. "Don't tell anyone, please?"

"You're going to break up with him, aren't you?" asked my mom in a deathly serious tone. "Aren't you?"

"I-" I hesitated.

"Kayla Susan Windstrom!" my mom cried.

"You don't understand." I said as hot tears started blurring my vision once again. She didn't. Even though Sam had hurt me, both physically and mentally, I still loved him, as stupid as it seemed. In my heart, I knew that I had to break up with him sooner or later…. Or be condemned to a life full of hurt. I stared down at the ground as my mom began a lecture, one of her famous ones….
