Author's Note: Hi! So, if you read the first announcement, as you can see this is a rewrite of this story. So, those who read this story before, the story is very similar to the previous story, it just has been slightly modified (aka it does not sound like a child wrote this but someone that finally has learned to write like an adult, sort of).
Hopefully, I am going to be able to update monthly (which sounds like a long period, but that's the fastest I can at times).
(Also, sorry if there are errors, I have revised this chapter so many times that I no longer see what is wrong with it. I'll go back and fix it if I spot one.)
Disclaimer: I own nothing related from Teen Wolf, basically anything familiar I do not own. The only thing that is mine is my original characters and plot. I am only going to say this one so you don't have to see this over and over again.
Chapter One: Au Revoir
"Today I'm not myself and you, you're someone else
And all these rules don't fit and all that starts can quit
What a peculiar state, we're in
Let's play a game where all of the lives we lead could change
Let's play a game where nothing that we can see the same...
We can take apart this life we're building
And pack it up inside a box
All that really matters is we're doing it right now..."
— Au Revoir, OneRepublic
The combination of flashing bulbs, the obnoxiously loud crowd, harsh wind, and the severe jet lag could have been the reason why Eléonore Hartmann was suffering a pulsing headache.
She was seconds from throwing up on Victoria Argent's shoes and something told her that might be the end of her if she did that. She sighed in aggravation, looking back at the casket, wishing she was anywhere but in the middle of an empty cemetery that was surrounded by disrespectful people.
This wasn't how Eléonore wanted to spend her first day in Beacon Hills. In a funeral, that was surrounded by a bunch of disrespectful photographers and people, all wanting to get a peek of the casket of the crazy murdering arsonist of Beacon Hills. Also known as Kate Argent, beloved sister, aunt, and respected hunter.
Eléonore glance to her left, seeing her older brother, Benjamin, wearing the same uncomfortable look like her. If his expression didn't give him away, it could have been his constant fidgeting in his seat, his hands mindlessly playing with his tie, his eyes darting everywhere while his leg jiggled incessantly next to her.
In any other occasion, she would have comforted him, but she decided to let him suffer. It was, after all, his fault they were here, both for Kate's funeral and Beacon Hills. So, Eléonore simply sighed again, mentally shaking off all her worries and frustration. She did not need to fall in that rabbit hole, but that didn't stop her from glancing around the cemetery in disdain.
As terrible as she sounded, Eléonore didn't want to go to a funeral. Especially when the funeral would be the day they arrived at Beacon Hills. As she expected, she was exhausted after a long plane ride and had no strength to deal with mourning people, but after Benjamin had badgered and threatened her until she begrudgingly relented.
She hated how he out of nowhere he had become the voice of reason when usually she was the who would try to reason with him. Eléonore didn't win the argument to skip the funeral, but she did convince him to go to their new apartment the moment they arrived in Beacon Hills to refresh themselves.
They didn't have time to marvel at the place the would now call home as then they quickly headed straight to Beacon Hills cemetery, that was packed with cars and people. It had been so difficult to get inside with the multitude of people shouting and taking pictures, but at least there was the police, trying to keep the situation in check.
When they finally managed to get inside the cemetery, Eléonore quickly realized the reason why Benjamin had been so insistent for them to attend Kate Argent's funeral. Besides the multitude of people been held back by the police, it was just the Argent family in the ceremony. Chris, Victoria, Allison, and Gerard, and Gerard's guards if you chose to include them.
Without much words exchanged, everything went quickly, obviously, everybody wanted to leave this shitshow. Eléonore had spaced out mid-service, her mind and eyes wandering around, taking in the new surroundings that soon would become familiar to her.
She had to admit this town wasn't that bad. For a small town had its own beauty. But it did not matter how many pretty flowers or trees she saw, Eléonore still didn't want to be here. She wanted to be back in France or, the more realistic dream, at least her new apartment.
"Thank God, that it's over," Benjamin muttered when the priest told them to go their ways. Both of them walked away from the Argent's, wanting to give them some privacy, which was hard to say with how many people were surrounding them.
Eléonore couldn't help but crack a smile at his obvious relief. "Don't like funerals?"
"No one likes funeral." He gave her an apprehensive look. She could tell he wanted to add especially me.
"I don't know," she mused quietly, her eyes trained on the flowers that surrounded Kate's casket. "You one time said you were the one who put the word fun in funerals."
"I was ten and we were having a funeral for our cat, Eléonore. It was a joke," he whispered harshly, embarrassed that she mentioned his insensitive comments in a funeral.
"So your crying was also a joke?" she whispered, raising one eyebrow.
Benjamin exhaled sharply. "Eléonore, stop."
"What? I'm trying to make conversation."
"Are you that insensitive?" he questioned incredulously. "Come on, Eléonore stop making those jokes. They could hear you."
She snorted and glanced back to the obnoxiously loud crowd. She looked back at Benjamin and gave him a look.
"The Argents? No, they can't. With all this noise? I doubt it. I can be planning their murder in a speaker and they still wouldn't hear me."
"What made you be like this?"
"Death makes me odd," she shrugged, knowing that he was right. She shouldn't be making those comments right in front of the deceased family members, but she could always use her jet lag as an excuse.
"Yeah, well, I don't want to deal with this." Benjamin motioned her in distaste. "In the five-hour car ride."
"So we're not going to stay in town tonight?" Eléonore asked, disappointed that they were going to be traveling again.
"Sorry, but no. We still have to pick up a few of our stuff that's in San Francisco."
"But have school tomorrow," she pointed out. "And we just traveled for a really long time."
"I know about school, Eléonore. That's why we have to go right now, so we can make it in time for school tomorrow."
Eléonore groaned, remembering they still had a lot to do with their move. She nodded and glanced to see Allison standing alone, looking drained and upset. Eléonore felt a tug of remorse for not having a chance to talk to her. Benjamin looked to where she was staring and sighed.
"Okay you, psycho, why don't you be human for once and go and comfort Allison? Alright?"
She looked at Benjamin wryly and nodded. "I can comfort Allison."
"Then do it." He pushed her towards the distraught girl's direction. She looked over her shoulder, frowning. He seemed a little too eager to get rid of her.
"What are you going to do?"
He jerked his head towards Gerard and Chris Argent. "I'm going to talk to them."
"Alright, but please don't tell them about the murder joke. They might take it literally and I really don't want to get killed my first week here."
Benjamin gave her a small grin. "Your secret is safe with me."
"Thank you," Eléonore said, smiling back at him and started walking towards Allison.
When she reached her, she was about to give her a reassuring hand squeeze but Allison seemed to have another idea. Without a warning, she launched herself into the shorter girl, giving her a death grip hug. Eléonore felt herself suffocate at the girl's intensity, especially when she felt Allison start to shake and seemed to have no intention on letting go. She took even breaths, trying to refuse her urge to push her off. After a few minutes, Allison reluctantly let go of Eléonore.
"I'm sorry, I just really needed a hug," she apologized tearfully.
Eléonore nodded in understanding, and hopes that it showed her support, wrapped an arm around Allison. She gave her a supportive smile that felt more like a grimace. "Don't apologize. You know you can let it out with me."
"I know, it's just, I don't know if you understand how difficult this is for me."
"I think I have a good idea how difficult funerals are," Eléonore said wryly.
Allison's eyes widened and she covered her mouth, looking embarrassed.
"Oh my God. I totally forgot about you... I'm so terrible. Another funeral in less than six months."
Eléonore smiled tighten. "I was actually thinking about Kate, not about that. Kate was like an aunt to me. She was hard on me at times but she was great. I really admired her as a person and I guess a hunter."
Allison closed her eyes, trying to compose herself. "I'm sorry. This is hard with Kate's death and—" She cut herself to take a deep breath. Eléonore gave her a reassuring squeeze and the seemed to allow her to continue. "I just can't believe how bad everything is right now."
Her eyes darted over Eléonore's shoulder, making her turn around to see nothing. She looked back at Allison, noticing how distracted she seemed in that moment.
"Allison," she said softly but firmly to get her friend's attention back on her.
"Hmm?"
"Is there something else going on?"
"What? No. Why would you say that?" Allison voice came out slightly strained and avoided her eyes, affirming Eléonore's suspicions.
"Can't I ask you a question?"
Allison shook her head, looking bothered by that. "Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Analyse me, the situation. Don't be a... just don't be a hunter."
"Isn't that what we are?" Eléonore said and at the look Allison gave her, she smiled slightly. "I'm not being a hunter. I'm being a concerned friend. You seem really distracted. And not just you, you're parents also seem to be distracted."
She knew that Kate's unexpected death was hard, but it wasn't enough to make all the Argents distracted. Something must be going on that they hadn't told the Hartmann siblings. Glancing over where Benjamin was with the Argent men, having what seemed a deep conversation, she had a feeling they were filling him on the recent events.
She wondered if she would find out, or she would be left in the dark like always. Looking back at Allison, she gave her a reassuring smile.
"You can trust me, you can tell me what's bothering you. I am very good secrets."
"Yeah, I know, from the fact you hid that you were a hunter since we were children," Allison said dryly, forcing Eléonore's smile to drop.
"Right," she said, clearing her throat. "Although, in my defense, it's proof that I am able to keep a secret. Whatever you have to tell me, I'll take it to my grave."
Eléonore closed her eyes when she realized her poor choice of words, but Allison didn't seem to grasp her words, because she hurriedly said, "It's not that important."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Yes," she insisted and Eléonore almost wanted to laugh at what a terrible liar Allison was. While she was curious about what was going but decided to drop it. If it was really important, she would find out soon.
"Alright," Eléonore said, and Allison's relief was palpable.
"I hated that they're here," Allison quietly. Eléonore instantly knew who she was talking about. "It was supposed to mean something, her funeral, but now it's a joke for them."
Eléonore cringed at the loud noises the photographers and the people were making. She turned her back at them, wishing she could back to her apartment. There were too many people for her liking. And Eléonore hadn't lied to Benjamin when she said death made her odd. It brought out the vicious side of her.
"This isn't about them," Eléonore said softly, her hand rubbing Allison's arm. "Forget them. This is about you and having closure. They are not going to take that away from you. They did not know Kate. You did. And hey, the worst part is over."
"I know its just..."
"Hey," Benjamin said, interrupting them. He came from behind Eléonore, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Hello, Allison."
"Hi, Ben," Allison said, giving him a small smiled.
"I'm really sorry, Allison for interrupting, but can I have my sister for a moment? It's important and also your mom needs you."
Allison nodded, sighing. "Thank you, I'm going to go with my mom and see what she needs. Bye, Ellie, I'll see you tomorrow at school."
"See you tomorrow, Allison."
Eléonore waved at her as Allison walked away from them. Benjamin waited for Allison to get from earshot before turning to Eléonore. For the first time, she noticed that Benjamin looked tired. He looked older, he didn't look like he was eighteen, barely an adult. She had noted that the way he acted did add a few years to him. She wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing.
"Alright, so there was a change of plans," he said, his attention focused obnoxious crowd ahead. "We're not going to San Francisco. We're staying here."
"Wait, what?" She blinked, confused at the sudden change. Earlier Benjamin had been insistent for them to go to San Francisco and now this? "But—what happened to getting—?"
Benjamin waved her off. "It's fine. We can get them over the weekend. You were right. We just got back from a long plane ride and we have most of our essentials here."
"Alright, I understand that part but why are—?"
"Eléonore," he snapped, making her stop talking. "Can you just, please?" He pinched the bridge of his nose, taking deep breaths. "This is really stressful for me, and with you arguing, I can't."
"I wasn't arguing," she snapped and when she saw the look Benjamin gave her, she relented. "Alright, fine. But can you at least tell me why you changed your mind? If you haven't noticed, you're kind of a stubborn asshole and it takes a lot for you to change your mind in a second."
"I'm going to choose to ignore the last sentence to avoid me wanting to strangle you," Benjamin warned her and looked over to the forest. "Chris wants me to do something with him and Gerard tonight and, of course, I agreed."
"What are you going to do?" she asked suspiciously.
He shrugged nonchalantly. "Nothing interesting."
"Can I come?" she asked innocently
"No," he said automatically making her roll her eyes.
"Why not?"
"You made a huge deal in the plane how you wanted to rest."
"That shower I took at the apartment gave me newfound energy," she said, waving him off. "So, where are we going?"
"Eléonore," Benjamin said, his tone being final. "You are not going. Let's leave it like that, understand?"
She nodded slowly, honestly not caring what he did. She kinda wanted to get rid of him for a while. Almost twelve hours on a plane with just his company made her want to crawl out of her skin.
"So where am I going to be while you're off with them?"
"At the apartment, unpacking, taking a nap, or do whatever the hell you want, but the important thing is to stay inside, alright? Don't go out."
"Like I was planning on going out," Eléonore muttered, more than ready to get the hell out of the cemetery. "But alright, there's a lot to do despite the fact that Victoria and Allison helped with the important things week earlier."
"Yeah, Victoria wants to talk to you about that. Maybe that will keep you just," he said, satisfied that she listened to him. He shoved his hand inside his black coat and sighed. She glanced back to where Kate's coffin was.
"Isn't it fascinating that Kate's dead body is a few feet away?" she found herself saying. "I wonder when blood stopped seeping through her throat? Do you think her throat is wide open? Or they stitched it up because that's what they did with our—"
"Eléonore," Benjamin said sharply, his expression full of disgust. "What is wrong with you? Now isn't the time. Or ever. There is something seriously wrong with you."
"What?" she shrugged, not bothered by his harsh tone. She has never put a filter in her mouth, why would she start now? "Don't tell me you didn't think that?"
"No because I'm not a psycho like you," he hissed.
"I thought Kate was the psycho. At least, that's what the headlines say."
He sighed in defeat. "I don't want you in my sight anymore so..." Benjamin grabbed one of her hands and place a white rose. "Here, go put it in Kate's casket."
"Why would I do that?" she asked as she stared at the rose blankly.
"To show your respect, Eléonore. It's why we're here."
"No, we're here because you couldn't get it together," she muttered unable to hide her resentment. Benjamin tensed at the reminder of how he was the one
"I guess that's the proper thing to do." She nodded thoughtfully. "Throw a white rose, that is the symbol of purity and rebirth to a casket that holds a dead murderer. Why not?"
"I'm going to regret this," he muttered, exhaling and started slowly walking away from her. "Just don't do anything crazy. Okay?"
"I thought you were the crazy one," she muttered, loud enough for him to hear.
"I am," he acknowledged, looking back at her, "but so are you. Go, so I can take you home."
Home. So that was it. That small apartment was their new home. Their home was no longer that beautiful Victorian house with a large yard they had grown up. As scary it was, there was something exciting about this drastic change.
"Eléonore," Benjamin said impatiently, going back to her and gently pushing her towards the casket. "Pay your respects."
Eléonore remained rooted in her spot, staring at the rose she was holding. While she was treating the funeral like a joke, the media not helping, she couldn't ignore the part of her that was weary of the whole situation.
"What if… what if I… I don't want to?" she asked hesitantly.
Benjamin turned to look at her, his expression void of emotion. Eléonore tried to not fidget under his heavy gaze. She briefly wondered what was going on through his head. Was he thinking about the last funeral they attended? Was he finally realizing what a shitty brother he had been these past few months?
What felt like an eternity, when it probably was only a few seconds, he looked away, sighing heavily.
"We all have to make sacrifices, Ellie."
"I'm aware," she said, annoyed that he was trying to win her over with his responsible big brother act. Benjamin looked over to her, frowning.
"Then stop acting like a child and go. Pay your respects."
Eléonore opened her mouth to argue, but Benjamin was already walking away from her. She wanted to tell him that the reason she was acting like a 'child' and didn't want to go near Kate because it was too much, it was too soon for her. It would only reopen wounds that still hadn't healed.
But she couldn't tell him that. Even if she had the chance to say it to his face, she wouldn't have. She was a Hartmann, a hunter, and a hunter wasn't weak, or an emotional mess at the sight of a casket. She had to hold her head tall no matter how much in pain she was and pretend like she didn't feel a thing.
Bitting inside her cheek to stop herself from making a fool of herself in front of the Argents and those disrespectful reporters, she tightened her grip on the rose, and marched with all the grace she could muster towards the grave that now had Kate Argent's casket inside. Once in front, she felt a strange wave of coldness wash over.
This was the end rode for Kate. Eléonore had always admired the huntress. She was cool and brave and always knew what to do. Eléonore always remembered having fun with her.
"Come on babe, don't tell me you're afraid?" taunted Kate, laughing.
"Never," shot back fifteen-year-old Eléonore. "I'm just teasing them."
"Good girl," she approved, going behind her and grabbing her shoulders and whispering into the young girl's ear. "Show them no mercy."
Eléonore raised her gun and aimed straight at the head, without hesitation pulled the trigger.
Eléonore stared at the white rose, twirling it idly. All jokes aside, she was upset that Kate was dead and hated the person that killed her. But there was nothing to do. She was dead and the killer was dead. Like her father would say, the dead are gone and time for the living to move on.
The cool air hit her face, making her hair go all over the place. Pulling her hair away from her face, she took a step closer and threw the rose into the hole. The action felt anticlimactic like she had been expecting something else to happen, but nothing did. The rose simply feel along the other white roses, ready to be covered with the dirt and decompose in less than a few days.
She breathed out heavily and looked up at the gray sky. God, how she hated funerals. They were so depressing, especially when you were a hunter and your entire life had been taught showing emotions mean weakness. She wondered why they bothered with funerals if all they were going to do was stand in front of the body showing no emotion?
Hearing her name being called out, she looked over her shoulder and saw Victoria motioning over to her. Clearing her throat, she went over to her and Allison, who had just joined her mother.
"Yes, Victoria?" she said politely.
"You're staying with us for tonight," Victoria told her.
Eléonore frowned. "Benjamin said that we were going to stay at the apartment."
"Change of plans," she said and placed a hand on Eléonore's shoulder. It should've been reassuring but it felt suffocating. Another person was telling her what to do. God, she was sick of being told what to do.
Don't cry. Wear that dress. Don't say that. Stay with us. Pack your bags. Stop talking.
"I think I want to settle down in the apartment," Eléonore spoke up, surprising Victoria and herself. "Besides, I don't want to be a burden. I think its better if I allow you to be with your family."
Victoria did not look pleased to hear that, which did not surprise Eléonore. She was not the kind of person that got told no, whether because the fear she brought or respect.
"Mom," Allison broke in and gave her mother a tentative smile. "Its been a long day. I can't imagine how exhausted Eléonore is. I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to let her go home and rest."
"Thank you," Eléonore mouthed. Allison gave her a small smile, which made Eléonore feel guilty. She was acting selfishly for not being there for Allison, but she just needed to have a moment to herself.
Victoria did not seem pleased to have the two girls go against her but nodded tersely. "I suppose Eléonore does need to rest."
"Then it's settled," Eléonore said quickly before Victoria changed her mind. "I'm going to get my brother to drop me off at the apartment. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Bye, Ellie," Allison said and went for a hug. It lasted a few seconds before, Eléonore pulled away. Giving a polite smile to Victoria, she turned and went to join Benjamin, who was still talking with Chris and Gerard.
She paused when she passed the casket, something inside of her stirring. Taking a hesitant step towards it, she whispered in French, "Goodbye, Kate. You will be avenged."
With one last look, she walked away with her head held high, having little clue how that promise was going to change her stay in Beacon Hills.
