"Jimmy!" A girl with long brown curly hair and sparkling blue eyes shouted in annoyance with a hint of playfulness. She chased after the boy with light brown hair, keeping up with him as best she could, which was quite close.
"Give me my hat back!" she yelled as they raced up the stairs and to the front of the boat.
"You're gonna have to catch me first!" Just then she tackled him to the floor, straddled him and snatched back the hat. Placing it on her head she smirked.
"You were saying?"
"Fine you win this time."
"Thank you very much!"
"Hey! Jimmy, Alex. Get back to work. The passengers are gonna be here soon!" Mr. Haynes yelled from the steering house. It was just another day on The Venture. The place Alex called home all her life. Her father was the captain of the steamboat, Captain Englehorn. Her mother sailed on this boat with them since having fallen in love with the Captain. They got married and had Alex shortly after. But one fateful night when Alex was ten, she fell overboard and her mother jumped in after her. She saved Alex but didn't manage to save herself. Though Englehorn wanted to leave Alex with relatives after the death of her mother, thinking it was for the best that she have a normal life, she would not allow it. Being as stubborn as her father she finally won and was allowed to stay. The crew was her family and all she needed was them and the sea. With that her life was complete.
"So where are we headed this time?" she asked Jimmy as they stood up.
"Singapore apparently."
"Good. We have been docked too long." She said with a sigh.
"It's only been two weeks!"
"Again too long." She smiled as she looked out at the sea. Yes she thought too long indeed.
