He tried to cry, all the time.
When he was submitted to the orphanage he tried, when Mello beat him up he tried, and when L passed away, he really tried, but nothing came out.
It wasn't normal for a person not to cry, this made him feel even more different to others than he already was. The other children at the orphanage teased him for having white hair while he was still young, they pretended he was an old man who needed help from the younger children.
The one boy who constantly picked on him was never afraid to show his emotions, when he was first submitted to the orphanage his eyes were bloodshot and tears kept running down his cheeks, his name was Mello. After that, he tormented everyone, except one person, Matt. The albino always wanted at least one close friend, whom he could tell everything to. Sometimes when he walked pass Mello's room, Mello would be sobbing on the smallest things, like on the low supply of chocolate, and would always share his problems with Matt.
When the white-haired boy went to his room, he would solve 3 or 4 puzzles, then build something, and then he would always climb onto his bed, sit down and hold one knee, and try to cry.
He could never even get one single drop.
Once he had given up, he would climb into his bed, curl his legs towards his chest, close his eyes and sleep.
Mello knew the times the boy would go to sleep, half an hour later he would sneak into the albino's room and sit next to the bed. Mello would look down at the white-haired boy, and watch the small, crystal tears silently run down the boy's peaceful face. Mello would always bend down and give the boy a gentle kiss on the forehead and whisper in his ear.
"Goodnight…Near."
