Cry Wolf
There were were two of them, stalking through the underbrush like brothers of a pack. But he knew they couldn't be pack. There was no real coordination, nor the graceful choreography of shared mind and purpose. When they parted he followed the smaller one, driven by his enticing odor of inconsolable grief and seething fury. He sped up, a silent arrow in the night, desire dawning. The impact sent them tumbling to earth, his claws tearing apart flesh and muscle, his tongue eager to taste that powerful wrath. He didn't even hear death coming, the silver bullet searing through his brain.
Sam watched the dawning sun steam the morning dew off the Impala from his motel room window. Behind him, Dean groaned in his sleep.
What if I hadn't gotten there in time...
Sam gingerly lifted the bed sheet, peeking at the white medical tape and gauze that now criss-crossed his brother's abdomen.
What if I hadn't had that silver bullet in my gun...
Sam gently pressed down a stubborn curled corner of the tape, watching his brother's lean stomach muscles quiver against his touch.
What if I...
Sam lay down on the adjacent bed, sleep finally overtaking his exhausted mind.
