Falling Out of the Sky
AUTHOR'S NOTE ~ Falling out of the sky: We learned in WHN that Arthur has a highly improbable aura. But where did he get this from? In addition, having flown around space for a good seventeen years, why didn't he disappear like Fenchurch? Entities who began their lifespans in any of the plural zones are advised not to space travel and they do so at their own risk, remember? Let's see why Arthur was different.
~
Alice Dent was sat on the blue grass. From here she could just about see the purple rolling sea and the sun which shone its glorious pink light on to the huge Mountains of Cheese on the horizon. This was odd, because a few seconds earlier she had been laying on the living room floor, about to give birth a week too early. She had not been unduly worried - her husband, Phillip was a doctor and knew how to cope with this. But then there was the fact that he suddenly didn't seem to be around. This also didn't worry her too much - he had just gone to fetch some towels, he would be back in a minute - but there was then also the fact that this did not look anything like her living room, and the door from which Phillip would shortly be returning seemed to be missing too. Alice tried to stand up and get a better view, but all she managed to deduce from this was that heavily pregnant women really shouldn't be doing things like that. From where she had slumped back down she could just about make out a signpost though. 'Welcome to Banania', said the sign, 'The most Improbable place in the Universe'.
"Excuse me, Madam," said a voice. Alice looked up to see what looked like a knight in armour riding a Unicorn.
"Do you need some help? You appear to be in pain." The unicorn spoke this time.
"Um, yes." Alice replied, "I think I may be about to give birth."
The knight helped her on to the unicorn's back, got on himself, and the unicorn galloped on.
"What is your name, Madam?" asked the knight.
"Alice. Alice Dent. You?"
"My name is Haddock-Fish, knight of the mystical order of the power of the Plastic Pudding!" he seemed very proud about this, and pointed to a green plastic badge on his armour in the shape of a pudding. The unicorn, apparently was called Sharpandshiny. Two hours later, Alice found herself lying in a four-poster bed in a Castle in Banania, the most improbable place in the universe, clutching a baby boy. He was red and wrinkly and utterly repulsive. She hugged him closer. She began to think about names. She and Phillip had agreed on Alicia if it was a girl, but they had not come up with an idea for a boy. The knights were giving Alice ideas, though. They even had a round table. no one would know, would they, if she called him it? She could say he was named after his great uncle or something. They didn't have to know that she'd got the idea from knights in a delusion she was having at the time of the birth. she didn't care, damnit, she would call him Arthur. Why not? In another whirlwind of movement, She found herself back on her own living room floor. Yes, she thought, just a delusion. Just at that moment, Phillip burst through the door.
"Oh, thank goodness!" he sighed, "that door has been trapped for two hours!"
"It's ok." said Alice, "me and Arthur are just fine here aren't we?"
Arthur had no idea what was going on. This was a character trait which would last the rest of his life. He decided he was hungry. He began to cry.
~
In the castle belonging to the knight Sir Haddock-Fish, the woman who called herself Lady Alice of Dent and her infant son disappeared from a bed in the north wing. No one thought this was strange.
~
THE END. or is it the beginning. (cliché, I know, but true.)
