Sudden
"You killed her!" Alex accused, biting off the words.
The man across from her bared his yellowed teeth, growled under his breath. His hands on the table continued to clench and unclench as he stared holes in the female detective. From the corner, Bobby Goren watched as his partner did her part to break down the suspect, little by little.
"You," Alex snapped, slapping photos down on the table in front of the man. "did this. You slit her throat and threw her into the river."
The man continued to glare, continued to stay silent. His name was Bernard Greene and he had killed. But he wouldn't let the detectives know that. It was his little secret. All his. . .
"And now you're too much of a coward to admit it!"
It happened so suddenly. The large man jumped to his feet, lunged across the table and wrapped his giant hands around Alex's thin neck. They crashed to the floor as the woman gasped, scratched at the man's hands, his arms, his face. Bobby was on him in a flash, struggling with the man and his partner's life.
Alex writhed underneath the two, fought for breath. Bobby watched as her honey-colored eyes began to water, began to glaze over.
The door to the interrogation room burst open and officers swarmed in. They, along with Bobby, wrestled with the giant man and were finally able to drag him off of their fellow detective as he screamed and yelled, kicked and punched.
"Alex!" Bobby dove for his partner as she let out a sputtering breath. She gulped in air as her hands went around her throat. He snaked an arm under her back, pushed her into a sitting position. There were tears running down her reddened face, soft sobs hiccupping from her throat.
"I'm okay, I'm okay," she said quickly, breathlessly, despite the pain. She gripped her partner's arm as her head lolled onto his shoulder. "I'm okay."
"Good Christ," Bobby breathed as he rubbed circles over her back. "You're okay."
