A/N: WARNING! This fic deals with heavy emotional situations. Please do not read this if you are looking for fluff or smut. You will not find that here.

This chapter is just a brief introduction. The first chapter will come sometime this weekend.

Dr. Maura Isles stared at the computer screen blankly. The results were in for the test she never should have done, and she felt a lump in her throat. This was why she stuck to protocols. This was why she followed the rules so precisely, and did things by the book. This was why she didn't allow herself to get emotionally invested in the people on her autopsy table.

But who could blame her?

Maura pulled out her phone and hit speed-dial #1.

"Detective Rizzoli," came the raspy, familiar voice of her best friend.

"Jane!" Maura felt her eyes stinging. "Jane, I- I did something I probably shouldn't have, and- and..." She had no idea how to continue. How could she possibly explain to Jane the horror of what she was seeing in front of her?

"Are you okay?" The concern in the detective's voice was obvious. "Maura, what's wrong? Talk to me."

"Please just... Please come down here."

"Of course. I'm on my way."

Click.

Maura felt sick to her stomach. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. This wasn't why she'd done this search. But there was no going back to ignorance now.

She'd never known any real family; not biological family anyway. She knew of her adoptive parents, but beyond that... nothing. Then this case happened. This boy, with an ice pick rammed into his head, had autosomal markers in his DNA profile that had matched her's exactly. There were enough markers in the comparison of the two sets of DNA to make a definitive conclusion: he was her brother.

It made Maura wonder; did she have other siblings she didn't know about? This boy was dead, and even after solving this case, there may be no way for her to find out the link between them. She may still have absolutely no idea who her biological parents are. But if there were others... if she could find anyone else whose DNA matched her's, she might have a real shot at discovering her own past.

It wasn't legal to do what she was doing, she knew that. But she figured it wasn't like it was harming anyone, so there was no reason not to. She had widened the search parameters of the DNA to a nationwide search, and she'd gotten a hit.

"Maura!"

The door opened behind her, and a frantic brunette woman walked in, her usually crazy hair pulled back into a ponytail. Jane's worried gaze was enough to make Maura break down into tears.

"Hey hey hey, don't cry, Maur. Please don't try." The detective wrapped her arms protectively around her, waiting until the sobbing stopped. "You couldn't have done anything that bad. Shhh." She rubbed Maura's back, trying to calm her down.

Finally, Maura pulled away. "It wasn't what I did," she explained, sniffling. "It was what I found."

Jane raised her eyebrows questioningly.

"Jane, I have a twin sister. And she's dead."
