Arwen looked up as something ran across the road in front of her. Asfaloth appeared not to have seen it, for he did not react, but when she looked she saw that it was a small boy, running through the forest. She watched him, wondering who he was, and where he was going.
She gasped as she saw the misty form of a building appear among the trees, built of white stone. A grey-haired man stood at the end, on what appeared to be a balcony, staring out into the distance. The boy ran towards him and he turned to pick him up, whirling him around.
It was only then that Arwen recognised her beloved Aragorn.
The boy turned his head as his father – surely this was a vision of Aragorn with the son he might sire in the future – held him in his arms. Tears came to her eyes as she saw the Evenstar around his little neck.
This was her son, as well as Aragorn's? This was the future that she was giving up?
She closed her eyes tight and felt a single tear run down her cheek. Had her father known that this was a possibility?
She looked up again to see that someone else had entered the scene.
Her tears evaporated as though they had never been as she saw a fair-haired woman go over to Aragorn. She was heavily pregnant and as Arwen watched, Aragorn turned to her, put an arm around her shoulders and kissed her on the lips.
"Mamma!" cried the child that she had thought was hers, reaching out to Aragorn's mortal wife.
Arwen closed her eyes again, this time in anger. When she opened them this time, the mysterious vision was gone, leaving only empty forest.
"My Lady?" She looked down to see one of the elves that her father had sent with her. "We cannot delay."
"Men are bastards," she replied, then wheeled Asfaloth round and galloped back towards home.
If she discovered that Aragorn had indeed found someone else, she wasn't going anywhere near those Havens until she had ensured that he was never going to be a father.
