my best friend's girl

You don't know how to say goodbye.
She doesn't know how to say goodbye either, you can tell, because she's trying not to cry. She's attempting to act like she doesn't care that you're leaving, but she's always been bad at hiding things and besides, a tear is running down her cheek now anyways so the charade is over.
"God," she says, rubbing at the tear streak roughly. "You must think I'm pathetic, huh?"
Normally, you would say something biting and harsh like "You're always pathetic" or "There's no way I could think any less of you anyways" because you like to hurt her, probably because you are a sadist. But even you know that now is not the time for insults, but you don't know what to say (besides insults), so you just don't say anything.
"I mean," she continues, "It's not like we're together or anything so it's definitely pathetic for me—"
You cut her off with a kiss.
It's passionate and hungry and wonderful and everything you thought it would be, but you instantly regret it. You pull away quickly and bite your lip, an old habit you had when you knew you had done something wrong.
She's panting a little bit and there's this strange look in her eyes that you can't place, and then it's replaced by a look you do know and she says, "Sasuke," in this soft voice, and you look away because you can't stand to see the longing in her eyes.
Probably because it's mirrored in yours.
"Sorry," you mumble, shoving your hands in your pockets. You turn around and begin to walk away.
But, of course, her voice stops you. "Sasuke!" she calls, and you look over your shoulder at her.
She opens her mouth, "I—" then seems to think better of it. "Goodbye," she says instead, and there are so many unsaid things in that word that you find it hard to keep track.
I'm sorry, she's saying. I should have waited, she tells you silently. And finally, the one that hits home the most—
You were too late.
All of these are unspoken, but you hear them as clearly as if she had shouted them in your ear. Or maybe that's just your own voice screaming "Go get her go get her go get her—"
But you don't. You can't. You've accepted the truth, and that's why you're leaving.
So instead of saying anything back, you nod at her over your shoulder and continue walking. You don't know if you'll ever see her again, but that's okay. You don't want to. You're tired of hurting and wanting her and struggling not to touch her. You know you have to stop all that, and you definitely know that you have to forget about that kiss, because, well—
Who are you to take your best friend's girl?
(He touches her arm lightly, and she turns around and smiles at him.
"Hey Naruto, what's up?"
He nuzzles her hair and breathes in her scent.
"Just looking at my girl."
Her smile falters a bit, but she quickly puts on an even bigger one, and no one can tell that it's a little bit forced.
"I'm not your girl, silly. I'm your wife.")

…It depresses me a little that the stories I enjoy writing the most are the sad ones.
But oh well. Review please! =)
