That Night
The case was over, the picture of a five year old girl named Jessica who had been kidnapped by her grandparents was still on the board.
Samantha has looked it for while. Everybody has left the building but Jack, who was finishing some paperwork.
As soon as Jack had finished the report, he closed his notebook, thinking about Hannah and Kate; tonight was Marie's night with them
He was waiting for the elevator when he noticed Samantha. Her eyes were fixed on the picture. "Sam, you coming?"
Samantha seemed like she was in some kind of trance.
"Sam, Are you okay? You hearing me?
"It's amazing what love can do. It makes one happy or devastates a whole family."
"Are you talking about Jesse? I think her grandparents loved her so much that the feelings changed into selfishness to the extent they couldn't share her with anybody else."
"It's not fair to take away a child's right to live with mom and dad."
In this moment Jack closed in on Samantha; holding her arm, he turned her toward him.
"You're not talking about Jessica, are you? It's about us."
"Hannah and Kate had a father, a family now......."
He cut her off, "They still have a father. I'm their dad. You did nothing wrong."
Samantha wasn't sure because their affair had ended with Jack leaving his home.
The room was totally in silence. Samantha turned back to the picture, and Jack stood trying to figure out what was going through Samantha's mind.
There was silence, Samantha looking to the picture, then back to him. Whatever was happening bothered Jack..
"Have you ever thought that it could be another way?"
"Sam" He stopped, taking a breath before starting again. "Samantha, you know......"
This time she cut him off. "It's over? Yeah, you've told me that."
Samantha took the picture from the board, putting it on the table in front her while Jack touched her shoulder.
"Samantha, I didn't want it to go like this. You don't deserve it." It upset Jack very much to see her this way.
"I don't understand why we can't be together. I care for you so much."
"It's not as simple as you make it sound."
"I know that, Jack. However I can't... I don't want to live like this. It's not fair for you to be with me, when you have your daughters..." She was pretty sure about this, at least.
"Have you ever thought what could happen if we got involved? People talk; you know that."
"Doesn't matter what they say. It doesn't bother me as long as I'm with who I really love."
"Are you sure?" Jack asked
"Sure how much I love you? I knew that since the first time we slept together."
"We could be fired."
"They can't survive without Jack Malone. And I don't believe Van Doren would fire me."
Jack put his hands on Samantha's waist; their bodies pressed against each other. He looked in her eyes, then he kissed her passionately. She responded. The intensity was like neither had kissed the other one before.
That night he had Sam warming him all night. At dawn he'd pick up his daughters from Marie's house.
The end
