Voodoo That You Do
(Shut up, I needed a title this time.)
Fandom: Once Upon a Time
Pairing: Swan Queen
Summary: Based off of a tumblr post about the possibility of a doll coming to life to protect you when you need them, Regina needed someone while Emma was gone in The Enchanted Forest…
It is 5 AM after flipping my shit over other things I was trying to make, so unbeta'd again. Make that 6AM because apparently I can't read numbers anymore.
It was only supposed to be that one time. The magic was still a little strange in this world, but it was more familiar now that she had the spell book and phantom of Emma's touch upon her arm. She wasn't angry so much anymore. She was sad. Just sad. Her son was gone and her heart ached every day in his absence, but just as much, she missed that insufferable blonde who lived solely to push every one of her buttons.
It was just going to be once. She needed a hug so damn badly, and it seemed only the Savior would do, because, Regina figured, she would know just how she needed to be held. She hated that she was right. The woman who stood before her and wrapped her arms around her in a sturdy embrace was nothing more than a bundle of fallen leaves wrapped in magic, but she was enough.
It was a strange and wonderful and wicked thing, magic, and more than that, it was everything to Regina. It was all she had. That, and a small doll made of fallen leaves from her apple tree and a lone golden strand of hair left behind on Regina's silver shirt. It was only supposed to have been that one time, but the need to look into trusting eyes, to have someone to talk to was too much sometimes. The created being was all around the perfect replica of Emma Swan, from the sheriff badge on her hip to the banter they'd share. Except THIS Emma couldn't accept her invite for dinner, nor could she remain a physical form when the mental images of the real woman washed over Regina so strongly when she worried after her in The Enchanted Forest.
But she…
She could kiss Regina so sweetly that for the smallest of moments, she could pretend she was back in the library exchanging barbs and waiting for the blonde to slay a dragon for her. She could whisper all of the words Regina longed to hear since Daniel died, that someone loved her knowing all that she was, that they loved her BECAUSE of all that she was. And this creation could look into her eyes just as sharply as Emma could for Regina to fully understand that the words were true. It was love. It was false and incomplete, but it was one thing that couldn't be taken from her this time.
But when, many days later, the real Emma stood before her, embracing Henry and looking over to her, Regina thought she saw a glimpse of such words in the sheriff's eyes. Then there were two simple words both given and received by each of them, and it was enough to make Regina place the bundle of now dried leaved into a box, next to everything else she had carried around to get her by, knowing she didn't need it anymore. She was willing to try to create something real this time.
