A Beautiful Man
Author: Lysis (December 2012)
A little Christmas present for all of us who love Alexander and his kalos Hephaistion.
His limbs bore the strength and beauty of Herakles, long, tanned, and well muscled. His every movement was one of endless grace and power. Be it on the battlefield, in the palestra, on his horse or simply walking, sword clanking at his hip other men knew a god walked among them.
His face was smooth and proud, eyes of violet blue met each man openly, there was no artifice in him, no, not this man he stood firm, he knew himself and carried himself accordingly. He feared nothing, and the wisdom of his thoughts shinned through his eyes. He did not bend to vanity the way some might or turn at the sight of shining gold or promise of power. He owned all those things, they were as his very skin, but he tempered them with the wisdom of one years older. He was not always a patient man, but always an honest one. His courage, excellence, loyalty, and prowess in battle were things his lover bragged about and honored him for.
"Who is that, is it Alexander? Oh, he is kalos." Sighed a raw, young recruit newly come to Pella. His breath stopped in his throat as the man neared him.
"Aye, kalos" the handsome blond man standing some few feet away hearing him grinned and answered as he slapped the recruit on the back to show his good humor when another soldier nearby hissed his grievous error. The young man trembled as he turned to face his general-in-chief whose marvelous blue-grey eyes were alight with joy and pleasure. "That is Hephaistion, kalos Hephaistion. The recruit caught the look of pride in his king's eye and rejoiced that he loved such a beautiful man.
