The Epic Battle
a Harry Potter drabble.
She was a crafty foe, knew his tricks, and was sacrificing pawns to win. He'd lost a knight to her, but still had his queen, and with that piece his king was safe. Hermione had never bested him at chess.
Ron just needed to calculate what her next move would be.
But when she moved, there was a flash of orange, and then his queen was gone.
"Crookshanks! Bloody moggie beast!" He glared at Hermione. "You cheated."
"I did not," she replied. "He's a cat. Cats chase things that move." She looked over the board and smiled. "Oh, look. Checkmate."
