Wedding Cake
MJ and Peter held the knife together as they slowly sliced a piece of their wedding cake. The crowd cheered and they smiled at each other. Soon the room was filled with light from flashing cameras to take a picture of the happy couple.
MJ's heart fluttered with excitement. However despite her happy façade, there was a little voice in the back of her mind whispering one single word that made her quite unhappy. "Gwen." Yes, it was a name. It's the name of her husband's ex girlfriend. She was concerned and having doubts that she was the "one" for Peter.
She looked around the room at all the people that attended her wedding. She wondered if anyone was thinking the same thing she doubted in herself. "Too bad Gwen wasn't alive, he should have married her." Her face was red from panic.
She thought back to the days she helped Peter grieve over Gwen. She was worried about him, her friend. At the time, she had no idea he was Spider-man. She thought he was a regular guy who lost his girlfriend in a tragic accident. Soon she found other reasons to see if Peter was "ok". She developed feelings for him, but she didn't want to hurt him while he was already in so much pain from loosing her. "Geez, here I go again. Keep a grip MJ, she's dead, she's not the other woman or anything." She thought to herself. Still she was in competition, with a ghost of all things. Her loved her so much.
Still, she'll never forget the day when he admitted how he felt; it was a few weeks after she learned he was also Spider-man. They were at his place, on his couch. He was flustered and he looked like he might explode if he didn't get to admit his true feelings, "MJ, you've really helped me a lot these past few months dealing with Gwen. Sometimes I even find myself not thinking about her and..." He stopped and looked in her eyes. He moved closer to her on the couch, and slowly he put his hand on her cheek. "And what Peter?" She whispered. Inches from a kiss, he leaned forward and whispered in her ear, "I end up thinking about you." She felt her heart pound and then a slight tingle of regret and thought, "Does this mean I'm second best?" Then she ignored her insecurities and found herself entranced in her romantic feelings for Peter. She slowly started kissing his neck and then they went into a deep passionate kiss.
On today of all days, her wedding day, she was thinking about her. She thought to herself, "What if she was still in the picture? Would he still have developed feelings for me? What would Peter think if he knew I was second guessing his feelings?" She couldn't help it.
Now it was time for the groom to feed the bride a piece of the wedding cake. She snapped out of her daydreaming and smiled at Peter. He dabbed a little piece of the cake on her nose. He leaned forward and kissed it off. She thought to herself, "He loves me, I know it. I wouldn't be in this dress if he didn't."
She grabbed her piece of cake to give to Peter. She held it in front of him and quickly took it away, making him loose his footing and fall a step forward. They laughed; she put the piece of cake in his mouth. Then they hugged and kissed. For the rest of the day, she didn't hear any more whispers that made her feel self-conscious; she was with her Peter and that was all that mattered.
