A/N: I obviously don't own the characters. This just popped into my mind while writing 'Boundaries'. You don't need to have read it to understand this, but I'd love for you to! This will be in two parts =D
Water and Land
Annie Walker had always loved the beach. When she was young and her father had been stationed near a beach she had played in the sand for hours. In her young mind she had developed a story that there were a few very lucky sand particles that were carried away by the beautiful, white-crested waves to strange and wonderful lands that they could have never dreamed of. They must have had wild adventures, young Annie had thought, and not been tied down to where its family was. To where it had to be because it was told to be there.
When she graduated from college, Annie had been very much like those small pieces of sand. She allowed the waves to carry her all across the world. Wherever her heart desired. She breathed in the salty air and laughed into the spray. She was free.
Ben Mercer was her ocean.
With his crystal clear blue eyes he represented everything that she had longed for. He was the embodiment of freedom. They found themselves in a wild, three-week long romance with no pause button and no one telling them it was wrong. Nothing got in their way.
Until he left.
As much as she tried to enjoy her younger self's view of the ocean, it just wasn't the same after Ben. Every wave that rolled across the sand reminded her of his eyes and she found her tears soaking the sand. He had swept her away and left her to drift aimlessly in life. Left her alone and abandoned, but how could she blame him? That's what waves do? They sweep sand out and away never to land in the same place twice, but they do not stay with the sand.
