One...two...three...four...five...six...seven...eight...nine...ten...eleven. Eleven unnecessarily loud chimes from the bell tower signify that it is now eleven o' clock in the evening, but it's cry falls only on the ears of children like John Egbert. The tower was pointless, really; people only ever complained about it, but the council didn't have the money for its demolition. It was an old, ugly and very intrusive building covered in deadly thorns and dying leaves. The old wooden door that had once been locked tight with chains and too many padlocks had wasted away long ago, the chains rusty and in an untidy pile nearby. Teenagers often snuck in there together as dares, and some snuck in alone for 'The Window'. There was once a window near the top of the tower so tourists could climb up and look out at the once beautiful city, but the glass had been shattered leaving only a hole gaping high above the jagged stone placed to protect the tower against thieves and vandals. It was a popular suicide location for the depressed, hopeless teenagers (and even adults) that remained in the ugly city now overrun by gangs and thugs. It was widely viewed as a disgusting sight, and a disgusting building, although children like John Egbert didn't mind it; sometimes, its menacing bell was the only noise they heard that wasn't the unkind comments of passing strangers that liked to complain about everything they could. Much to their annoyance, the council didn't have the money, nor the time of day to cater to the needs of the citizens. The council didn't even have the money, nor the time of day, to keep innocent children like John Egbert off the streets.

Oh my. I do hope you weren't hoping for a happy tale of love and kindness, because you're definitely in the wrong place for that. This is the tale of a very special broken doll named John Egbert, and a very normal boy named Dave Strider, who just happens to be in possession of some glue.

A/N: Wow, I'm actually pretty proud of this. Whaddaya think of the intro, guys? I'm starting on chapter one right now, don't sweat it!
