Disclaimer:  I do not own "Rurouni Kenshin" in any way, shape, or form.  Tory and the mysterious girl are of my creation though.  Please do not sue for I am a poor college student with no money, only bills.

Author's Note:  This is my first try at a "Rurouni Kenshin" fanfic, so I am sorry if the characters are OOC.  Plus, since I only know up to the end of the Kyoto Arc, that is where my story starts. Please read and review.

Chapter One

"This sucks!" the girl yelled to the sky.  "Why did this happen to me!"

Tory Mitchell was a young woman of  22 on her way to the west coast.  She had just graduated from college only two weeks ago and was on her way to her first job.  Instead of flying though, she decided to drive the distance from Denver to Seattle.  It should have only taken her two days but then this happened.  She was in Wyoming on some side road or highway and she was stuck.  She had been walking for about 3 hours now since her car died on the side of the road. She waited by the car for an hour and absolutely nobody drove by.  That was when she decided to pick up her duffle bag out of the back of the car and walk.

"Driving out here was supposed to be fun before I started a new job, but no.  My stupid car had to die in the middle of nowhere, literally.  Why didn't I just fly," she said to herself.  She stopped to get a cigarette out of the inside breast pocket of her jacket.  She pulled one out, put it in her mouth, then started searching other pockets for her lighter.  It was nowhere to be found.

"DAMMIT!!!!!  Can this day get any worse!" she yelled again.  "Why does this happen to me.  Why can't my life be simple like that in my animes I watch.  I mean, come on.  Does Kenshin ever have to worry about his car breaking down one thousand miles from where he has to be in two days. No!  I wish my life could be that simple."

After putting the cigarette back into the box she started walking again.  Unbeknownst to her, a girl who was floating in mid air, looked down on Tory and smiled.

"Wish granted," she said with a smirk before she disappeared without a trace.

It was now eight p.m. and Tory was tired.  She had seen only four cars pass her that day and she was mad that none of them stopped when she tried to wave them down.  Tory sat down beside a rock and decided that it was safe enough to rest for a while.  She had gone on many camping trips in her life that were a lot like the situation she was in now.  She took the duffle bag off her shoulders and opened it.

"Might as well eat the rest of the lunch I packed before I left."

Inside the duffle bag was all of her belongings.  A couple of pair of pants, some shirts, two sweatshirts, another pair of tennis shoes, her movies, her computer toolkit, and most importantly of all, her brand new laptop she had gotten at graduation.  As she grabbed the last sandwich and one of her Mountain Dews, she decided to pull out her college sweatshirt as well.

"It will probably get colder in a few hours." She said to herself.

As she finished off her sandwich, she put the bag into her duffle and started to doze off.

'A few hours of sleep should be good enough and if anything tries to sneak up on me, I can defend myself pretty good.  I am a black belt in Karate after all,' she thought to herself.  Soon she was sleeping soundly beside a rock.

"So Tory, are you ready for your trip?" the girl asked with a mischievous smile on her face.  She suddenly raised her hands and a light surrounded the still sleeping Tory.

"Off you go!" the girl yelled and Tory was gone.
