Author's Note:
I wrote this shortly after watching Schindler's List. The scene where their burning the bodies of everyone just haunted my thoughts. This poem is supposed to be written with that scene in mind. Hopefully it conveys the emotion I hoped to capture. I'd like to write another one, but reviews for this would be highly appreciated. I've never attempted to capture emotion quite like this before. If you liked it or not, please let me know.
These fires never happen as often as they should
The Earth by fire once again made bare
Flame purifies what water never could
A fire that brings an awful stench to the air
Bodies consumed by massive flame
Mounds built high like a temple to their god
Germany's soon to be unforgotten shame
A fire simply destroying what was once flawed
A simple swastika pin always worn
The cries of the dead seem to go unheard
A prayer for a new age to be born
Nazi anthems now forever heard
The causal glance off to the side
A spirit broken under the black and red
The realization of so many people who are dead
There's not a tear that's able to be shed
A factory whose walls protect the enslaved
The only heaven on Earth left to be known
With a single investment so many were saved
The symbol of their gratitude forever shown
So much money becomes immaterial
A human life available for a cost
The reality becomes too unreal
For so many were lost
