I've seen so many rants about this it is ridiculous, but none of them seem to make the points I keep looking for, so you, fellow readers, get to see Cinderfire jump on the Twilight Rant train. (Yes, I know that I'm late.)
One of the many things I noticed in the course of my reading both the source material and fanfiction is that the background characters have more potential for growth and depth than the main characters. And so here we are. I'm starting out with a rant and interchanging chapters with headcanons and character flaws that I've found, so here goes.
First chapter: Twilight Book Comparisons
Twilight v. Romeo and Juliet
Someone on a Twilight Rant on Wattpad commented that Romeo and Juliet was an epic love story. I am not a fan of the original Twilight series because if the truth is told, the fanfiction authors definitely give the original story a run for its money. But please allow me to voice my opinion before everyone grabs their pitchforks and tries to burn me at the stake.
Romeo and Juliet was a play written by William Shakespeare that demonstrated two teenagers who fall in lust and defy the standards of their family to be together. In my opinion, This is exactly what happens in Twilight.
If anything, Twilight proves that Shakespeare was right to end the story the way he did, because Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet had no real future together. Think about it. If the story did not go exactly how it was supposed to, if those two sat down and talked things out like the rational adults everyone praises them for being, then the story would go nowhere because they would either run off never to be seen and their family's war would only get worse OR they would fall out of love and continue fighting their family's war. In short, both stories are exactly the same and Shakespeare never actually wrote love stories. I don't get why people praise him as an example of what to aspire to when none of his stories portray what people are actually looking for.
It's less like Happily Ever After and more like Slice of Life with Cruel Realities. That is my issue with someone trying to raise Twilight to the levels of Romeo and Juliet. They're on the exact same playing field. There are no standards to be set.
Edit: I later found that the commenter was more likely interested in the fact that the results of of their suicides made their families stop fighting for good.
Twilight v. Harry Potter
Can I just say that people who think they can compare Harry Potter to Twilight rationally on either side are fighting an uphill battle for no reason? Harry Potter and Twilight are two totally different sets of books about two totally different worlds. There is bound to be more depth in Harry Potter because that world was set up to be complex and have fifty different layers. Twilight wasn't set up the same way or with the same purpose in mind. So why exactly do people keep comparing the two?! Can someone tell me that?!
