It was starting to become a tradition. Everyday at lunch Petey would sneak off campus with two little brown paper sacks. Being the head boy he really didn't have to sneak off, he got special off campus privileges, but he really didn't want anyone to see where he was going.
Jimmy was the only one starting to catch on to him, but only because Jimmy knew Petey surprisingly well. Other than that Petey was pretty secretive about his daily visits to Happy Volts. He had to hide the paper sacks under his shirt when he came in, since any outside food was prohibited, but he still got in. Petey went at the same time everyday to visit Gary in his room.
Gary might have been a downright psychopath and he bullied Petey mercilessly, but they had a sort of special friendship that was bonded over their love of Petey's home made lunches.
When Petey entered Gary's room today he practically jumped up from his sterile white bed, grabbing a lunch from Petey and ripping it open, "Ya know how long I've been waiting, Petey? Geez, do you expect me to eat the plastic shit they serve here?"
"Sorry, I got held up at the front gates. Just be grateful that I even came," Petey sat down on the bed with Gary, noting how uncomfortable it was. He opened his lunch sack, removing his usual home-made goodies: Strawberry banana smoothie, celery sticks that Petey's mom grew in her garden at home, a baggie of chocolate chip cookies, and a bologna sandwich. It was a meal that Gary has really come to enjoy.
Gary devoured the celery sticks in an instant; They were better than the rubbery celery and carrots that the Happy Volts cafeteria had called lunch, "Ya know Pete, this lunch isn't half bad. But women are better at cooking anyway, huh?"
Petey pursed his lips, taking a sip of his smoothie through the bendy straw, "Shut up Gary. And use a napkin, you're getting food on your robe gown thing."
Gary looked down at himself, simply licking the excess food off his pure white "robe-gown-thing." Then he was chugging his smoothie, just getting more on himself again.
"You're like a sarcastic, sociopath child, ya know that?" Petey grabbed a napkin from his lunch, wiping the food from Gary's gown, "They'll stop letting me in here if they found out i'm sneaking you food."
With a snort Gary bit into his sandwich, spitting crumbs as he spoke, "Then you'd just find a way to sneak in here. You're like a little house wife, coming to her husband's beckoning call. Obviously I wear the pants in his relationship."
"Relationship? In your dreams maybe," Petey couldn't help but laugh, and eventually Gary joined in. For the rest of the hour-long visit they ate their food and joked, genuinely enjoying each other's company. Every visit they got more and more friendly, and the food got better and better. Hell, Petey even brought in a big slice of chocolate cake for them to share.
Gary couldn't help but think that if this is what his experience in Happy Volts was gonna be like then maybe, just maybe, he could tolerate it. Until Petey broke him out and they drove to Mexico to become gourmet chefs, that is. But like Petey said, maybe in his dreams.
